Penny’s is my favorite “cheap eats” place in the city: Not only is the food inexpensive (the generous entrees average around $6) it is tasty, fresh, and served up quickly in a pleasant dining room. Simple menu: Mostly noodle and rice dishes, along with some soups, salads and appetizers. But the food is well-prepared, and the wine list, while also limited, offers great deals: $5 for a glass, $18 for the whole bottle. What’s not to love about that?
My favorite dish here is the “hot pepper noodles” which consists of wide rice noodles, choice of meat, tomato, egg, basil, black pepper and red pepper (ask for “crispy noodles” at no extra charge). Other favorites are the “Thai Ravioli” (pork filled dumplings),Thai fried rice (plenty of onions and basil) and the crispy rolls (stuffed with shitake, noodles and cabbage). These dishes, like all of Penny’s food, are definitely prepared to suit the American palette, but I like it anyway.
Portions are large, so you might want to consider sharing an entrée if you do appetizers first. Also, service is almost instantaneous: They have several cooks on duty and their basic menu means that everything is quickly prepared (this makes Penny’s a great option if you are in a rush). Penny’s does get busy, but turnover is quick, and you won’t wait more than 10-15 minutes for a table during peak periods. No parking, though it is right next to the Damen blue line stop, so getting here after work is a snap.
