Considering the disparate nature of the source material on this retrospective (from mini discs to two inch tape), “I Did a Power Slide in the Taco Stand” does have a flow. Credit that to the uncredited engineering and Trevor Sadler’s post-remix mastering. And it’s nice to have some of this on a CD. The listenable half of “Ghostride” made it to this compilation, and sounds as it should have if Flambeau would have had the finances to release it on CD in ’89. What earlier songs like “Hwy 100” and “Mobile Home” lack in refinement, they more than make up in their Springsteen/Mellencamp ideals through a Jerry Springer lens. Listen to “Hwy 100” carefully and you’ll realize that the romanticism of “Born to Run” is completely misplaced. Need further proof? Listen to “Mobile Home” and “Little Pink Houses” back to back.

Couch Flambeau "I Did a Powerslide in the Taco Stand" Couch Flambeau only delivers half a loaf (or tortilla?) to its 40 something leather-punks-with-grandkids fan-base. If they wanted ALL the old stuff on CD because their new SUV’s don’t have cassette players, they’re going to feel cheated. While “You Must Be From Cudahy” sounds better in this 2001 recording than any version previously recorded by CF, it’s not the song on the tape that you slid into your Craig Powerplay hanging from the dash of your Cutlass. That is a good thing, because Couch Flambeau isn’t done making startlingly good rock and roll. I suspect that’s why most of their newer and previously unreleased material on this CD is live takes for radio station WMSE. This band is currently much better than its old catalogue.
