A well-rounded bookstore - as unimpressive as it is unimpressed (a Philip Roth quote you won't find there due to a dearth of Philip Roth). This is the store for anyone who is self-absorbed enough to actually want to emulate Kafka in his or her real life. Obscurity as chic is just too disaffected and reverse snobby to tolerate. So what if they don't have The DaVinci Code? There are too many other books they don't have to waste your time here, unless you're just that friggin' "hip."

This bookstore has a very large assortment of books at excellent prices. It's probably the best place to go on the North Shore for academic press books, though certainly the Powell's down by the University of Chicago has it beat in that regard. A previous reviewer rightly states that you can kill a lot of time here without being hassled. By the same token, though, don't expect any help from the staff. It would appear the bricks and morter thing is a bit of an afterthought, and certainly customer service is out. The usual response here to a customer approach is unpleasant surprise, and downright hostility is not unknown. But if you go for books, and not people, fine.

There is never enough time for me to spend here.

When my children told me about the great book place they had found in Hyde Park, I knew it had to be Powells. What a good feeling, that it's still a treasure, and that all these generations of book lovers still have it to enjoy!

This is a really nice store. Everything is organized well and the people are fiendly. Highly recommended.
