Most of these reviews are at least a few years old, so I thought its time for an update.

This restaurant has gone down, way down in service, quality of food, and appearance. Last time I was there, the women's toilet was leaking all over the floor. I thought to myself, this is just once, they'll fix this, so I tried again. No changes. Their food is constantly different, starts to smell stale, and the appearance is hardly tended to. Its too bad this place has ruined so much, it used to be quite a joint. Don't waste your money.

Raj has some of the better food in the Chi-town area outside of Devon Street, IMO.

To comment on the Indian posts: I'm Indian, and I haven't ever had issues with being seated in the back. I'm sure if you would pull your head out of your behind and let them know you would prefer to be seated near the front, rather than passive-aggressively come here to complain after the fact, they would be very accommodating. And if you have a reasonable amount of people (like under 25), the service is awesome.

    Definitely recommended!

Ever since the delicious, yet obnoxious (as another poster so accurately depicted) Moti Mahal closed, Raj Darbar has become my #1. It is the most consistently good indian delivery in the lakeview area. The only other indian delivery restaurants around are Star of India and Standard India (both near Belmont/Sheffield) and I am always disappointed when I give those guys another shot. Until those Devon restaurants start delivering, or a better indian restaurant opens in Lakeview, Raj Darbar will be my one and only indian fix. The phone staff are very nice and polite and understand what I'm trying to say most of the time, and I've never had a problem with their delivery service. And the food is pretty darn good too!

I agree with all - the food is great. I haven't had a problem with the service (although I usually order take out) - as a matter of fact, the delivery person has called me on several occasions when he's run into traffic, plus, they're delivering fairly far for me and never have complained... A tip: Ask what's good on the particular night vs. going off the menu - never been disappointed.

I agree with the previous person about the rudeness of the staff and owner. They are routinely late on deliveries, but I continue to order from them because we have no other choice. The problem is that Indian restauranteurs typically treat Indian patrons badly. They are usually seated in the back near the kitchen or bathroom. Almost always, the white patrons are seated in the best seats. Indians have a double standard created by long term British Occupation, apparently we still feel a need gain approval from caucasians. What is the solution? Simply deny them business. But even I am a hypocrite. I still order from them. Again, we just don't have many good choices for delivery in Lincoln Park. The food is good, you just have to put up with the rude service.

I agree that the food is good, but the staff including the restaurant owner were very rude. We had a small party of 25 people at the restaurant. They did not serve the agreed upon, menu. They served us what they had. Many times, i had to remind them to get the curry, bread. The way the owner behaved with us, made us believe that he is a total jerk, who does not know how to be courteous to the customers. I wont recommend anyone to dine in, rather pick up the food.

Raj Darbar is a welcome addition to the near-ish north side. Now I have another option besides obnoxious but delicious Moti Mahal, and I don't have to make the trek all the way up to Tiffin on Devon to enjoy delicious, spicy Indian food in a pleasant atmosphere. Reasonably priced, pretty nice wine list, spacious restaurant, good service. Recommended.
