Salpicon is fantastic! To Nair: In Chicago, we regard southern California as a slap in the face. The whole state is a laughable waste of space and should be "forced to close". Alas that is not possible, and so the rest of us remain stuck with people like you.

My husband and I dine frequently at Salpicon. The food is always fantastic and artfully presented. Some highlights; lamb chops in pasilla chile sauce, simply grilled pescado al carbon, quail in ancho sauce and when in season the soft-shell crabs in sweet garlic sauce. Their list of tequilas is mind-boggling and their world-class wine list is one of a kind. One of Chicago's finest!

I'm not sure why a reviewer thought this restaurant was "like getting slapped in the face." It sounds like s/he was looking for burritos and came to the wrong place, but that's like looking for a hamburger and calling a steak a "slap in the face." It's just different, it's not insulting! I grew up in southern Arizona, raised on Mexican food like this reviewer says s/he was, and I love Salpicon because it's such a delightful, creative new "take" on my beloved old flavors and favorites. I took a friend here, a Chilean woman raised in Los Angeles in a Mexican neighborhood, and she loved it too. They have a great wine selection. And the prices are really reasonable for such spectacular food and nice ambience. I highly recommend Salpicon--probably my favorite restaurant in Chicago. Try the "chef's tasting menu," which isn't always available when the place is busy, but is a sheer delight when it is to be had. The only caveat--the desserts are delicious, but somehow they aren't as utterly outstanding as the rest of the food. Try bready fruity things, like bread pudding or cobbler; the cakes are nice but less inspiring.

Excellent contemporary Mexican cuisine! Don't come here if you're looking for tacos and enchiladas; this is upscale and unique! Great wine and tequila lists. On both of our visits we thouroughly enjoyed everything. Will be back soon!

if from los angeles california, where we all are raised on Mexican food. i moved to Chicago and became homesick, Chicago has a real shortage of real and decent mexican restaurants. I found Salpicon and it was like getting slapped in the face. In Southern California this restaurant would be taken as an insult, and would be forced to close.
