Beautiful but underutilized, the South Shore Cultural Center is the "furthest south" of Chicago's famous "Lakefront Jewels." Although used extensively for weddings and meetings, and as host to a few special events, the site has never realized it's potential as a "Palace for the People" and a showcase for emerging and established Chicago talents in the visual and performing arts.
The Chicago Park District has never had a "vision" for what the old Country Club could become and is mostly interested in taking advantage of it's income potential. Unfortunately, the community so far has not accepted the financial and political responsibility of creating and sustaining a true "Cultural Center" at the site; as has happened with other important locations along the lakefront.
Until that happens, as long as the Chicago Park District continues to maintain the grounds; which include a 52,000 sq ft Mediterranean Clubhouse, 9 hole Golf Course, Tennis Courts, Nature Walk and ample beach, the South Shore Cultural Center will remain a lovely place to visit but a monument of failure to the south side of Chicago.
If you should visit, please remember to leave a small donation for the South Shore Cultural Center Advisory Board. For more information visit: http://www.hydepark.org/parks/southshore/sscc1.html
