I decided to visit Bittersweet (it's close to where I'm visiting friends) after a good review in Chicago magazine. I was a little concerned by the bad reviews I read here, but actually I had a really nice experience. I was there around 2 pm, when there were about five others at the counter also. It's a nice shop, though not in the most upscale neighborhood (I passed Egor's Dungeon on the way there). I looked around -- lots of delicious pastries. My server was pleasant, patient with me the newbie, and friendly. I got the pistachio French macaroon and a burned baked butter custard with fresh raspberries -- absolutely delicious. The ice cream wasn't particularly outstanding (they had a roasted banana ice cream and then just ordinary flavors). Here's my recommendation: get pastries to go, and definitely sample the fruit tarts. Also, don't go during peak times. There are tables inside, but also benches outside (though again, not the nicest neighborhood). The #77 bus stops almost right outside Bittersweet.

We made an appointment for a cake tasting for our wedding cake and showed up on time. They kept us waiting 45 minutes during which time no one came over to apologize or let us know what was going on. We were about to leave when they finally came over. The rude sales person barely acknowledged that we had sat and waited for so long. When we finally got to taste the cake it was dry and tasteless. I agree the "creme brulee" filling made with sour cream is nasty. They gave us a small gift certificate as an apology (as if we ever want to go back there), although they still never actually said anything as an apology about the wait. Needless to say, we will take our business elsewhere. This was a truly awful experience.

I'm sad to hear that so many people had bad experiences at Bittersweet. I have always found the food and ecclectic merchandise delicious and well worth the long lines. I admit at times that their staff is hurried, but I don't doubt that it is no different from what the crew at Starbucks undergoes during their morning rush. I have met the owner myself on occasion, and I believe that his mannerisms come from too many years working as a Chicago cop before retiring to the bakery business. I've never had a bad experience with him, but then again I am not as sensitive as some having worked retail myself for 2 decades. I have bought their tiramisu for dinner parties, and loved the fact that the price included the stoneware. I also love giving their homemade truffles, a baguette and their truffle honey as house warming gifts.

WOW WHAT A DISAPPOINTMENT in customer service! I ordered a cake, picked it up, signed the receipt and went on my way. Several days later, a man claiming to be the OWNER calls and tells me that they rang up the receipt wrong and that I "needed to do the right thing and pay the difference" (which I immediately agreed to do). He was not very nice about what was essentially their mistake and I was really offended at his suggestion that somehow I had done something wrong and now needed to "do the right thing". I called back and said I was a bit offended by his comments and really didn't think they were appropriate. I was greeted with outright hostility and shouting! He told me he'd be happy if I took my business elsewhere and invited me to tell anyone else to do the same.
So, there you have it, the owner of Bittersweet would like us TO TAKE OUR BUSINESS ELSEWHERE! I agree. This had to be one of the worst and most offensive customer service encounters I've had in a very long time. I won't be back.

STAY AWAY! That's the best advice I can give you. Whatever you do, don't order your wedding cake from this place. My fiancee and I went for a tasting. Cake was stale, fillings were awful. We told the owner that the creme brulee tasted a little sour, she informed us that they make it with sour cream! Yuck- just try to find another pastry chef that does that!?!? There are tons of better places for food and desserts in the city of Chicago. I don't know what the guests on Check, Please were thinking...

My family and I were so disappointed with Bittersweet. After hearing about the show on Check Please, we were anxious to try it. Having read some reviews, we knew to get there earlier in the day, since they close early.
Unfortunately, it took over 30 minutes to get our food which was only 2 sandwiches. Our server never brought the root beer float we ordered, one of their signature items. Finally, another server came by and took our plates before we were even finished with our food.
We really wanted to like Bittersweet because of what we had seen and heard about it, and because all the sweet treats there obviously have been made with great quality and care. The poor service, long wait for our food, and lack of attention prevented us from even getting to dessert! What a shame. Go there for the treats ... and take 'em to go!

I Drove there from 90 miles away after seeing the show, Check Please! Being familiar with the neighborhood, I didn't find it necessary to call for directions as I knew exactly where it was. I was very disappointed to find out they close extremely early, 6:00 pm. on Saturday nights. So my reccomendation to Bittersweet is to stay open later. Next time I will leave earlier to make it on time. This time we had to settle for, Margie's Candies, No slouch either. The owner there found out how far we traveled for a little culture, and he bought us our dessert. What a fantastic gesture. Oh, by the way for all you dessert lovers, Margies stays open late. Quite possibly the best place to take your date for a sweet treat after a movie, certainly the most Nostalgic.

Picked up desserts for Easter. One of my brothers who enjoys and often has the finer things in life said "This may be the best chocolate I have ever put in my mouth." I couldn't agree more. Both the choclate mousse cake and the lemon tart were unbeatable.
