this was about the worst food, every time it was mediocre at best.

Honest appraisal : staff is good and seems ethnically aligned but not many on duty on Monday, 7/30. Service was erratic and disjointed. There are manager / owener problems at this restaurant and I would not go back nor tell others to take a chance. Party of 5 we spent $ 200+. Too many strikes not to comment here.
Waited 10 mintes for someone to come to our table for drinks. Appitizers came but sporadically. No fruit in the Sangria - a 1st ! Food : Nice menu but entre of Fajita steak overcooked and didn't look or tast fresh. All fish entres Tilapia, Yellow tail and Snapper were overcooked and dry. Come on guys your 1 for 5 on the food and 4 for 5 on the drinks.
Not a complainer nor reviewer but couldn't let this pass.

Moved to Rogers Park several months ago. Gruppo has become my home away from home. The food and wine is fantastic! The service superb! Everyone is so friendly. Hope more people find out about this great gem.

I'll go back for more of everything! The tamales ARE excellent. So are all fresh fish offerings, as well as the fajitas and enchiladas. Prices are a bit on the high side - but worthwhile for quality food - including many dishes that are prepared with the diner's good health in mind.

I wasnt very hungry, but it was lunchtime and needed to get away from the office -- I stopped in and had a Veggie Tamall -- The tamale was served a corn husk with mole sauce along with a side exotic fruit on salad leaf. Oh my god !! The tamale itself was very different; the mole sauce was the best i have ever tasted; the fruit was very fresh, cold, and delightful -- I will go back for more tamales.

I have to agree that the food is not terribly authentic. However, the food is tasty and very fresh, which is much more than I've have been able to say about some of the more authentic Mexican places I've been. The service is friendly and the prices have been raised since their move, but are still pretty reasonable. If you're not a stickler for authentic Mexican, I definitely recommend this place.

As a Mexican fan of Mexican food, I can honestly say that this restaurant does not serve authentic Mexican cuisine. Yes, the plating is pretty, the atmosphere awesome, and the staff friendly; but if you're expecting real Mexican food, you'll be greatly disappointed. After twenty-odd visits to the original location and the new one, the only items I've enjoyed are the green salsa (you can buy it in a jar) and the margaritas. I really tried to enjoy what this place has to offer, especially considering that there aren't many Mexican restaurants in Evanston. The last straw was when they drastically upped the prices on the menu when they moved into the new, swanky space. Upping prices + watering down authenticity= catering to wealthy patrons who don't want their taste buds to leave their comfort zone.

People who think this is good Mexican food have obviously never ventured south of the border. It is yuppie-mex at its worst. The salsa was too sweet and the food was bland. My tostada shell tasted and looked like it came from a package. The service and atmosphere were fine, but the food was not worth the money.
