I just found The Perfect Cup off of the thankfully open Damen Brown line and though I've just stopped in for coffee a few times and left I found the service to be very nice and coffee drinks very good. It seems quiet and comfortable in there--one guy was just in there relaxing with a book and a cup of coffee and a couple people seemed very comfortable on the back couches. (Plus the cops apparently go there so they must know where to find a decent brew in all their travels.)

I typically buy coffee at the Perfect Cup on Saturday and/or Sunday. I like the coffee and really enjoy the Little Miss Muffin pastries. The coffee is the best in the area.
To Morgan: if you worked here 3-4 weeks ago, I miss you. The new staff hasn't lived up to the performance of the previous weekend staff.

I am a previous barista at the perfect cup and I agree with most of the posts on this website. During my time there, anne and her staff never treated a customer poorly; Anne tried on a daily basis to make sure her customers were happy. I am disheartened by the negative comments that are being thrown at Anne and my fellow co-workers. If for some reason someone was treated poorly you must have warranted that type of treatment because the people that I worked with and for would never purposely treat customers with such blatant disregard; perfect cup staff just are those types of people.
Try the perfect cup and I am sure you will see what everyone is raving about is true. The perfect cup really does epitomize friendly atmosphere and genuine baristas.

This is not just my favorite cafe in Chicago, but one of my favorite places to be in Chicago. The coffee and pastries are delicious, the atmosphere is nice and low-key, the seating is comfortable, and the staff is very friendly, always willing and able to have a good conversation as long as the line isn't too long!
I enjoy coffee shops where you can sit and read, work, talk to a friend, or meet a client. The Perfect Cup is great for all of these things.

So apparently the "writing cabal" is upset, because a business owner asked them to leave. The outright arrogance of people walking into a business, taking up a gross amount of space and not buying anything only goes hand in hand with someone that would take part in a "writing group." I am sure the swill you produce on paper is on par with the swill you have thrown in regards to Anne and her business. Of course I tend to have little respect for those that take part in the self masturbatory practice of a "writing group." Anne's coffee shop is not public space, it is a private business, and you are lucky I wasn't there I would have been more than happy to eject your pompous asses to the curb, with very little ceremony and some expletives that could quiet possibly remove your head from your ass. Anne is by far the kindest person I have ever seen working behind the counter of a coffee shop. Every single morning she has a smile on her face, and she makes very blah mornings more pleasant. This is no small feat considering the time she has to be up every morning, God knows I would be grouchy. I have been in this city for approximately 5 months and Anne is one of the reasons I fell in love with this city. She is kind and generous every morning. She takes cares of her regulars and knows most of their names. The fact that anyone would attempt to slander Anne in such a fashion is disgusting, and sad. Apparently your self involvement has reached monumental proportions.
NOT A GOOD CAFE ! says: On Saturday 4/7/07 2:00 PM
One of the employees was just rude, slamming furniture around and banging the venetian blinds and slamming brooms and mops into furniture. It was about 20 minutes before closing time and I suppose she was trying to tell us the cafe was closing soon and this was her way to tell us she wanted us OUT! Before this she wasn't doing this.
This was totally unneccasary, disquieting and just plain RUDE. All she had to do was just approach us and politelty say "Folks, we're closing at 9."...or "Folks,, we'll be closing in about 15 minutes so if you would like to make another purchase, do it now. Thanks for coming to the Perfect Cup."...or something like to that effect.
The fact that Merrit has these kind of employees and lets them treat customers this way tells me quite a bit about the her. My experience with the owner has not been good, either. She has a hardness to her that is astounding! I 've seen her a couple times with some customers and she is harsh and defensive and attacking, or at least can be at times.
I agree with some of the negative comments from other former patrons below.

i have been a customer of "THE PERFECT CUP" for the past 4yr and have never experienced any of the problems that have been mentioned in a few of these post. The owner, Anne along with her staff, have been some of the kindest, generous, and caring people I've encountered over the years there. i have been to other coffee houses and have never had a cup of joe like the perfect cup has!
This establishment has "helped" me graduate college and i have also taken most of my clients and friends here, only to have them come back on their own to enjoy more JOE!!!!
FYI- I have been there when the "writers" groups have had their meeting and I for one am glad they are gone. Quiet? hardly....and i have seen them (5-8 people at times) who just walk in and dont order anything. Leeches...The Perfect Cup has every right to refuse service to people who feel they have to right to just walk in and take up space without patronizing the establishment!

Anne is the best! Having been a Perfect Cup regular for over two years, it has been not only the good coffee, but the generosity, respect, and care I have received from Anne and her staff that has kept me coming back. I think it is unfortunate that because a buisness owner will not allow a large group to disrupt the atmosphere- that so many come to enjoy- that people would accuse her of being harsh and militant. If you want a good cup of coffee and a pleasant neighborhood space to drink it in, Try the Perfect Cup!

I have been a regular customer at the Perfect cup for over a year. It's a wonderful place to study, have a cup of coffee with a friend, or just stop in on my way to work. The coffee is great, and the service is wonderful. Ann, the owner, goes above and beyond for her customers - not just being polite, but really going out of her way to take care of them. She also does a lot for the community - hanging local artists' work, donating to groups and organizations and the like. I love being able to support a local business that adds so much to our community.
