Great cafe, friendly patrons, a nice place to eat, drink, read and mingle.

Tracie the owner is a sweetheart as is the rest of the cafe staff.

Five out of five cafe stars.

    Hi,

I was offended by a cartoon by the main cash register that has been posted there for a long time. It is a cartoon of Noah's Ark. The animals are going into the ark. Two animals comment, "Too bad the unicorns are gay." The first time I saw it, I thought it referred to the cafe's name, but the caption was just out of place at the only cash register for the place. Since then, the cafe owners have changed hands, and it is still there. It is a very odd thing to have in sight for every customer who orders a drink. On my second visit, it bothered me more. I am sure many people find that funny, and it cute that it refers to the name of the place. However, it does not leave me feeling all that good since there are no rainbow flags or such things about the place, just that cartoon. I normally could care less about such things, but it does not make me feel welcome there. "Too bad." And then the employee did not know how to make a very simple coffee drink (Americano). "Too bad.."

Comfortable... welcoming... of course gret coffee. That summarises this unique cafe. No brass and glass here, just casual and sometimes lively conversation augmented by tasty treats. Try it and you'll be hooked too. j

The Unicorn is my favorite coffeehouse in Evanston. The coffee is artfully roasted in Evanston and batches are delivered frequently. Thus, the flavor potential in the beans comes through in the cup of coffee you are served. The coffee is roasted less darkly than at Peets or Intelligentsia, and so is more suited to my preference. The ambience is very pleasant, indoors and out. The counter staff are friendly and provide excellent service. Those staff choose the music, and their preferences cover a wide range of musical genres, and they have good taste. The new owner Tracie, is a charming person who appreciates her customers and solicits their suggestions for the cafe.
