This is a family owned cafeteria. During my first visit, I asked one of the chef 's (**possibly an owner** --he is always there in the morning, accent, 5'11, medium build, 55 years old with a dark heavy thick mustache) if they had a restroom. His response to me was, "Don't be asking me no stupid Sh**, you know were the bathroom is."
I was not shocked by this guys response. This place is ghetto.
I seldom visit Valois. I like their "Everything Omelet", but the ghetto vibe coupled with pools of standing water, and rat droppings in the bathroom is too much for me to handle.
Pros: Food Okay Cons: Ghetto
This place reminds me of Walmart.

Valois has become "our place" for me and my boys to get breakfast. The food is great, none of that fancy fake franchise food. Just real food, real good. The price is amazing but the staff, service and atmosphere make you feel like you've found a real Chicago gem.

Valois is one of the great institutions in Hyde Park. During one dark period of my life, the only cheering words I would here on any given day were the heavily accented phrase "what kind of potatoes my friend", any hesitation led to the follow-up questions "mashed or boiled?" Boiled with the roast beef, mashed with the chicken. One sure sign of a restaruant where they really care is good cole slaw -- Valois has it. A little noted fact is that the hamburger, on an excellent roll, is one of the best things at Valois, and at a very good price. The short ribs on Saturday are excellent, and were just as good in July of 2003 as they were in 1985. Consistency is second only to value for your money at Valois.

In 1959, when I was 19 years old, I used to go to Valois because the food was wonderful and the price was great. I had a job at the Museum of Science and Industry then, but I only lived in Chicago for about six months.
Last month, I was in the windy city and took my friend George down there for dinner. We were both thrilled with the food, and the price still can't be beat. The atmosphere is very nice. Thank goodness that after 43 years this fantastic restaurant is still going strong!
You can't find a place like Valois anywhere in Los Angeles (where I now live,) even with a search warrant!

I eat at Valois every time I visit Chicago from Texas. It's a good way to get the feel of Chicago....TC
