Went to this stand at the Taste of Chicago today. I normally NEVER throw out food because I see it as an incredible waste, but this wasn't even worth passing to a friend or even a bum to eat.
The chicken was bland, flavorless, burnt-tasting, and completely chopped-up, bone and all, into an incomprehensible pile. The first bite I took a sharp piece of bone lodged itself into the gum of my upper jaw and I painfully pulled it out. Tried some more chicken more carefully this time, still bland and flavorless.
The rice with beans tasted like rice with beans. No salt, no spices, just rice and beans. Water has more flavor than they did.
Needless to say, glad it was just a taste.

as reported about the 2008 taste of chicago. Vee Vee’s African Cuisine discarded the second highest amount of food, with at least 243 lbs. of food thrown out due to temperature violations. This figure does not include some food that should have been discarded, but was not. According to a July 3, 2008 inspection report, an inspector saw an additional 200 lbs. of “potentially hazardous goat, rice, jerk.” The booth manager was instructed to discard it, but “refused to cooperate with orders … started yelling and took food in his Vee Vee's truck.”
The incident at Vee Vee’s was reported to the Illinois Restaurant Association because city inspectors do not write citations for violations at the Taste, said Guichard. “This is more of an inspection that is more of a consultation,” she said. “We’re there to minimize the risk of something happening.”

Cheap food, but you get what you pay for.
The chicken was dry and stringy, and the beans were either overcooked to the point or mush or undercooked enough to be only a step away from raw. I was embarassed to take my girlfriend to this crappy place when even Popeye's has better chicken and beans.

I made the mistake of buying food from the truck that they have downtown, and the entire experience was rotten. The vendor/driver was more concerned with yakking with his buddies than taking my order and, when he finally did, he used the same bare hands to scoop it out that he had used to take money from previous customers with (which I saw walking over to the truck) which hardly seems sanitary.
Once I finally got my order, the meat was tougher than my ex-wife and the sauce tasted like it was it was way past its prime, reminding me of moldy salsa. Yuck! I guess it's my bad from buying food from a truck vendor.
I can't speak for the restaurant, proper, but the experience I had with their downtown truck makes me call it the rotten slop wagon whenever I see it.

I would NOT recommend this restaurant! I had my first taste of Vee Vee's at the Taste of Chicago and was very impressed with the curried goat with rice. However, after a visit to the actual restaurant, my opinion changed instantly. First of all, it took over 45 minutes for the food to come out. We ordered a meat pie for an appetizer, curried goat with rice and a plantain dish with goat. The appetizer came out about 5 minutes before the main course. The curried rice with goat was extremly bland. The goat meat was tough and chewy. Usually I like the "hole-in-the-wall" restaurants, but this one is by for the worst.

This is one place to have the real taste of African food. I heard President Bill Clinton ate at this restaurant and when I visited, I left with no little or no wonder why Bill dined at Vee Vees. Detractors should stop saying thrash and admit the Vee Vees leads, other follow. Pay a visit today and see for yourself the recent structural changes going on now at Vee Vees. I love eating out this African restaurant

After Driving for over an hour to check out this restaurant, it was worth the drive. The second time comming I was very disappointed the goat meat was half cooked the plantain was badly burned and the fufu tasted different.

Although the physical restaurant could use a little sprucing up and the preparation time could be faster, the food was amazing. I ordered the joloff rice with collard greens and a side of fried plantain. My companion ordered the coconut rice with goat meat and a side of fried plantain. Although I did not enjoy the joloff rice--it was too spicy, but somehow not very flavorful--I loved the plantain and collard greens. I also tried my friend's coconut rice and was even more impressed. I am a vegetarian and so I do not know how the meat entree tasted, but my friend really liked it and we are both about to place another order...

No hyperbole here, I had the worst meal of my life at this (charming looking) little restaurant. I ordered something they called soup, but was more like a sticky syrupy dark gel with chunks of goat meat (still attached to the bone). I'm not a very picky eater, and have NEVER thrown away food, especially something that cost me over eight dollars. But this was the time and the place. Maybe I'll try them again some other time, to be fair. . .but maybe not.

I would not recommend this place. There were only 10 people in the restaurant and it have taken over an hour to be served. When eventually served, The chiefs wife, is very quick tempered. The chicken and rice do not have a fresh taste, it taste as if it was (5) days old.
