I don't foresee ever returning to Kitsch'n on Roscoe. While I've never had a bad experience with the waitstaff (always very friendly and oftentimes apologetic), the quality of the food has suffered in the last few years. I can trace the decline almost to the point when the River North location opened. I live less than a mile from the restaurant, but it's lately been my breakfast spot of last resort. Today, remembering how disappointed I've been in their Breakfast offerings, I selected a Southern Fried Chicken Club Sandwich with Rosemary Mashed Potatoes. The chicken was pounded thin, presumably for tenderizing, yet was quite tough and dry, even after being fried. The potatoes were a complete disaster, very possibly reconstitued. They were relatively flavorless and if they weren't reconstituted, they were at least overcooked. All this for $9.95. There are so, so very many better quality places for the money.

As a young parent (I have a 3 year-old and an 18 month-old), I love taking my family to Kitsch'n. Where most restaurants, especially in the city, shun and scorn parents who have the audacity to take their kids out to eat, Kitsch'n caters to both adults and children. With nostalgia for the grown-ups and kid-friendly toys and a healthy menu for the little ones, we always feel welcome.

The only reason I gave this restaurant one star is because there wasn't a lesser option. One of my friends was in from out of town, and I wanted to take her to some of the great neighborhood haunts. When we got to Kitsch'n, we asked if we could seat ourselves after we had waited for a few minutes with no contact from the staff. One of the servers informed us, in a snide attitude, that there was a hostess and she'd be back, with no offer to either seat us herself or hunt down the hostess after we stood there waiting for some time and after other patrons started to ask the same question. Once seated and having ordered, our food came and it was a major letdown. Our food was cold to lukewarm and unappetizing. The poor service and annoying "hipster" attitude continued from the staff. I will never go back to this restaurant or recommend it to others. Avoid it at all costs.

It's a shame Adam had such an unpleasant experience here, and I hope he gives it another shot. This is one of our favorite local restaurants, and we visit once or twice a month. We've had some very good service - very friendly, without being creepy - with one unfortunate evening once (there was a crowd I think they weren't prepared for). The place isn't necessarily cheap, but it isn't expensive either. We've tried most of the appetizers, and they're great, and I really love the veggie wrap. And the pretzel bread is FANTASTIC, especially if it comes to you fresh out of the oven (or microwave, or something). We're usually too full to try dessert, but we had the brownie batter once, and it's FANTASTIC. Gooey batter, just the right texture of cookie for scooping, and REALLY yummy strawberries. Give it a shot if you're in the neighborhood.

This place is a joke. For the life of me I can't understand the blind loyalty to this restaurant. The food is generic, unless you count adding a ton of rosemary to dry hashbrowns as "spicing things up." The service is horrible, the drinks all have floaties, and the prices are ridiculous for what you get. A Magic Eight Ball on a table does not a good restaurant make.
