"Creative Space", an exhibition currently on display at Columbia College's Glass Curtain Gallery, presents an impressive variety of original prints selected from 50 years of work by New York Printmaker Robert Blackburn's own Printing Workshop. The show gives a fascinating perspective on the development of not only Blackburn's personal work (several of his original prints from various eras of his carreer are on display), but also that of his students and collegues. The work ranges from photo-based multimedia/montage prints, to painstaking black & white etchings, to full color abstract designs to name a few. "Creative Space" gives the viewer a rare look at not only the variety of work produced by Blackburn's workshop, but also the many personalities, socio-political issues, movements and distinct periods in time that gave rise to it. Along with the work, a documentary exploring the profound historical impact of Blackburn and his workshop plays on a loop in the gallery, giving the viewer further depth in their experience of the artwork. Overall, "Creative Space" is a rare opportunity to view such an uncommonly rich body of work. Especially important is the chance to see all of these remarkable pieces in one place, giving one a first hand look at the development of Blackburn's work, that of his students, and in a larger sense, the progression of printmaking as an evolving form. The show is up through March 25th and is definitely not an opportunity to pass up.
