Awesome bar! Great for Polish Highlanders. Great price for Okocim pints. Great atmosphere. Great music. Expensive food, but very good.

In June 2007, I flew into Midway Airport with my wife to meet some family members. We decided to check out Szalas which is nearby. The food was OK but the venue and the beer were great. I liked the different courses. The salad course had separate helpings of shredded cabbage, carrots and beets. I loved the apple cake for dessert. Where else can you go that has the menu in Polish? During our meal, a bunch of guys at another table stood up, lifted their glasses and started singing in Polish (I guess!).

OUR VISIT TO SZALAS WAS NOT PLEASANT. WE MADE A RESERVATION WEEKS IN ADVANCE AND REQUESTED A TABLE ACCESSIBLE FOR A WHEELCHAIR. AFTER DRIVING 65 MILES, WE ARRIVED TO FIND NO TABLE READY FOR US. THE HOST TOLD US THERE WOULD BE A 15 MINUTE WAIT. THE WAITING AREA IS VERY SMALL AND IS LOCATED IN FRONT OF THE BAR ENTRANCE. WE FELT IN THE WAY OF THE MANY PEOPLE WALKING IN AND OUT OF THE RESTAURANT TO SMOKE IN FRONT OF THE BUILDING. THE RESTAURANT WAS VERY NOISY. THE HOST DISAPPEARED AND FINALLY AFTER 30 MINUTES WE DECIDED TO LEAVE VERY DISAPPOINTED.

Our party of 4 dined there on a recent Saturday night. We had the stuffed cabbage, Hunters stew, cordon blue and breaded pork tenderlion. With it came excellant mushroom soup, some appertizers, 3 salads, entree and delicous apple cake. It was all served on beautiful handpainted polish china. We had a great time, the decor, food and service was fine. This is not a dine and dash place nor the cheapest place around but that is not what it is about. If you like ethnic, this is great fun

The environment was very pleasant and the food was all right. One thing that aggravated me about the experience was that they charge $2.00, for a serving size no bigger than a cup, for a non-alcoholic beverage (soda or tea). Please note I am not exaggerating on the size of the soda. And they charge you full price for refills.
There are a lot of nice Polish restaurants in the Chicago area. If your main concern is the decor of the restaurant, then I would recommend Szalas. However, if you're more interested in just good Polish food, then I would recommend Bobaks or The Old Warsaw.

We have found shelter yesterday at "Szalas" during the flooding storms. While watching spectacular lightnings through the large windows, we enjoyed excellent food and impressive decor! At "Szalas" one experiences an authentic ethos of the highlander's place. Even the immaculate restrooms have original folklore details... As for food, soups were really tasty, so were the main dishes. Very meaty. Excellent quality and quantity. Too bad the glasses with icy water were not refilled more frequently by the staff, but the service was great otherwise! Yet another excellent Polish spot close to everywhere in Chicago... :-)
