Must agree with Ramon-Samuel: best used bookstore in the city, though as a determined shunner of the other variety, I'd say best bookstore, period. Best prices of any Chicago shop I've seen, especially once you take off the 50% for books shelved a year or more ago. Owner is talkative but not boring, friendly but not phony. Going into this shop is exciting in a way that most bookstores are not, because you can be sure you are going to get deals. Steals, really, even by used book standards, whereas in most Chicago shops all the titles are predictably priced at market value and there's little chance of finding a bargain. Not much fun in that. So go buy a bag of books for a song so this guy can refill the shelves with more from his offsite treasure troves of stock.

I LOVE this bookstore. It's exactly the way a used bookstore should be. It's small and cramped and filled to the gills with books- not only on the shelves, but piled on the counter, on the floor, and in the windowsills. The proprietor still, somehow, manages to know almost every book he has in stock. And if he doesn't have it, he will cheerfully refer you to the bookstore one street down- Booklegger's on Broadway. He has random sales and specials, depending on which books he wants to get out of the way in his store. So you can usually find great deals on cookbooks, history books, architecture books, etc. And the fiction section is great fun to wander around, too. No, there doesn't seem to be any method to the madness. Books in the fiction aisle are not separated by author or genre (though the shelves seem to claim that at some point, they *used* to be), so it can be very difficult to find what you're looking for, or even to know if what you're looking for is actually in the store at all. But I think the whole point of a used bookstore is to browse and find hidden treasures. Bookman's Corner allows you to do this so easily.

And, as an added, GREAT bonus, the books here are truly, amazingly cheap. The most I've paid for a book is $3. The owner also gives 25% off on all books that have been at the store for over a year. With deals like that, make sure you're ready to go home with aching arms full of books!

This is, quite simply, the BEST second-hand bookshop in Chicago. Sure, there are others with more stock, rarer books, etc., but Bookman's Corner is what a used-book shop should be: Shelf after shelf of books from all kinds of categories, messy piles of books strewn everywhere, a somewhat cranky curmudgeon behind the counter, and LOW, CHEAP prices! Did I mention the categories? Fiction, Theatre, Mythology, Native American, WWII, Economics, Radical Politics, etc, a selection of books in Russian, Spanish, French, and German and his section of Art and Photography books is absolutely phenomenal. I can't recall all the times I've looked for an obscure book, and damn it if the Bookman didn't have it! Like I said, there are other second-hand bookshops around (though unfortunately not enough) with more books, more modern conveniences, etc, but Bookman’s Corner is a throwback to the way a used-book shop should be. It has character, dust, and most importantly, LOW, CHEAP prices. The Bookman replenishes his stock DAILY, so there are always new books coming into the store. If you want to book-hunt for hours, this is the place. You'll get dirty, and it's hot in the summer, but you can easily walk in with a 20 dollar bill and walk out with a stack of interesting reading. This place is an INSTITUTION, one of the last of a dying breed, and if you are a book lover, it behooves you to get to this place and enjoy rummaging through the stacks and shelves of this bibliophile's paradise.

This store is excellent. While it may require some hunting you can trust that it will pay off in the end. And the hunting is kinda fun...and you mist agree or you probably wouldn't care to know about the bookstore in the first place.
