Though the selection can be limited at times, I always find at least one movie I want to rent that moment, even it's not the one I specifically had in mind. A little more expensive than your standard Hollywood Video or Blockbuster, but it's great to be able to support a local business with an owner who's clearly so personally invested in movies and music.

Like the record stores of yore, Hardboiled is a place where old treasures can be unearthed. And also a place where new recordings can be harvested for you; with an eye to your tastes. Highly Recommended.

While the hip-hop section has a fraction of space compared to other genres, you can close your eyes, reach in, and pick out gold. I'll walk in set to buy one album, and I end up walking out with three. Hard Boiled has quality over quantity...not to mention the owner is walking entertainment encyclopedia...

Just mentioning my fondness for obscure Hong Kong martial arts movies brought out a pile of hard to find, under the counter, just in from Hong Kong flicks I had never even heard of -- with good reason. They're not available here! But this fellow cares enough about his stuff to actually go to the trouble to get this amazing stuff for us. The best store in Chicago for video. His music selection is great also, and I might add, the dude behind the counter owns the place and his only employee is him. He knows the store like the back of his hand. Patronize him now!

One of the best small stores for indie/out of the way music, period. The owner is one of the nicest I know.

The owner is one of the nicest people I have ever met. He gave us tickets to see a show that played on Friday night. I really do not know where to start in saying what a great place hard boiled is. Some record stores in the city give me the impression that the owner is a pretentious music snob, but the owner of hard boiled makes great recomendations of other albums to check out depending on what you might buy. Do yourself a favor and check out hard boiled.

Best store in Chicago for movies and music. Also has a solid selection of books and comics The owner is extremely well versed in film, music and books. He is quite friendly, and can direct you to items that will surprise & delight you. Even if all you know about a movie is a memorable scene, he most likely know what it is, and have it for you.
Best thing going today.

i did not find the owner to be anything but extremely courteous to both my girlfriend and i. he hooked me up with some hard to find albums, and even recommended some albums i had never heard. Great Selection of both vinyl and cd. definitely superior to any of the other record shops in chicago, especially for idm, braindance, and indie.

Farewell Facets. This guy has it. Contemporary Feature Film Heaven. His music selection is nothing to sneeze at, but his fast behind-the-counter REGION_03 DVD selections should be the first stop for any new owner of a region free dvd player. Next time you read some film critic's glossy raves about films they saw at a festival that will probably never reach US theaters - visit this nest. He'll likely have a few of those titles.

EXCELLENT selections of INDIE flicks and music! Good place to find those old Warhol flicks that bombed back in the day. It's too bad that the staff/owner seems to be a bit on the cold sign no matter how much money you spend. A bunch of the NEW music that is for sale gets opened and played in the store. So much for wanting to open the "new cd" when you get home. I am mixed.
