We visited Ashkenaz Deli for the first time yesterday and had a delightful lunch of "overstuffed" pastrami on marble rye, with a thick pickle spear, potato pancakes & split pea soup. All I can say is YUM. I haven't had that good of a pastrami since I was in New York or since "Stein's" retaurant in Lyons, Illinois closed a few years ago. Portions are generous and prices are good. Sandwiches will be served cold, unless you ask for them hot. I also see that they serve lox & bagels, matzo ball soup, smoked fish and other delicacies. It is a true "deli" so don't expect table service or fancy-shmancy dining. We sat at the tables outside and enjoyed watching the revelry on nearby Rush Street. While you're in the neighborhood, check out the lovingly-kept old walk-up mansions that surround that beautiful and expensive area on the "gold coast" of Chicago. All in all, Ashkenaz and the surrounding area is a jewel that you don't want to miss.

This is the only certified deli on the near north side. The chubs, pickled herring and the atmosphere is great. The govenor holds court on Saturday at 7am and the deli staff are a hoot. the corned beef and pastrami and chicken soup is off the charts. Many customers buy just the broth for flu and colds.

I am now in South Florida and totally miss the pastrami... with Russian dressing, of course (the best I've had). I crave Ashkenaz often.

I am now in So Cal, without a deli. I miss the soups most. But, I have the coast, almost an even trade. Thanks for the good times Jackie
