Had a tensed situation today and cancelled membership right on the spot. Thing is, more often than not you come across these people who imagine they own the weights and the machines - I dared using a pair of weights today and had this guy interrupting me int he middle of the exercise just to tell me that he was using those weights. I dropped them immediately on the floor and he got upset and called in the management who seemed to side with him. This was the 3rd time already when I have to face idiots who have a territoriality issue in this gym.

Moreover, you got to know - if you are a straight men looking to work out, this is DEFINITELY NOT THE PLACE FOR YOU. This gym is more of gay club where you get stared at in the locker room almost in an aggressive manner. Naked men walk around with nothing on and are making you feel sick to your stomach.

In all fairness, it certainly is the cleanest gym in town but very few people come here for sports ... but more for the locker room free voyeurism.

Let's face it. Unless you've got a personal trainer or a gym with lakefront views, it's hard to stay motivated pass the 2nd week of February to show up at the gym for your daily workouts. There's only so much tread-milling one can tolerate, stair-mastering one can abide by and spinning classes to grunt through. After a while, its drudgery. There has to be an alternative to staying reasonably fit without having to punish yourself with the company of a soulless machine. This gym -the one at the 900 North location - has it. Her name is Robin and she reigns supreme every Monday and Wednesday at the 6:30 p.m. cardio-kick class. The class is a mix of hard-core devotees, newbies, and regulars composed of the super-fit, the average, men and women. The singular best workout class I have ever taken. It's a class that people actually work their schedules around. "Sorry, can't make dinner that night. Got cardio-kick class." If you are interested in a fun, serious work-out that will leave you drenched in sweat as if you just left an hour-long boot camp, this is the class for you. Take it and you'll understand why she has such a devoted following.

As for the rest of the gym - very well maintained. Plentiful towels, clean locker rooms, friendly front desk staff, and abundant cleaning staff. The only negative - a management that, like many other gyms, is most responsive when you're signing up for membership.

If you’re coming from a small health club, Equinox will be a step up. But if you’ve belonged to East Bank, Lakeshore or MidTown, as I have, you might agree Equinox doesn’t measure up. I signed a one-year contract at Equinox a little over a year ago. The facility looks upscale and is well maintained. The area for stretching is inadequate, so I often had to wait for a space. I was able to make-do with the exercise equipment, but it lacks the variety found in Chicago clubs of this price range. If you work out with free weights, be aware there is rarely anyone from the club in that room during the day to spot you. The classes are mostly geared to the intermediate and advanced crowd, so you won’t find much here if you're new or getting back into shape after an injury. There are lots of for-hire trainers, but the free club employees were rarely available to help me with equipment. (By the way, the trainers here cost about 50% more than the other clubs I’ve belonged to.) My billing was often incorrect, and I had to call corporate customer service to clear things up. A couple of months before my contract ended, I left a note at the front desk for the club manager saying I didn’t want to renew. My follow-up calls to the club manager were not returned, and on my last day the club insisted I owed them for an additional 45 days because I hadn’t delivered the note “via registered mail.” (It’s times like this when it’s good to have a lawyer in the family.)

Gym itself has beautiful amenities, clean locker/shower and decent classes. Equipment is top notch. However, management staff is completely incompetent. Tried to cancel my contract as I was month to month and had moved out of gold coast area. After four month, several emails, and probably eight phone calls speaking with the mgmnt., no resolution. I ended up having to talk with my credit card company who now blocks their monthly charges. I will never be a patron of Equinox again d/t their pathetic customer service and I'd think twice before signing up as you'll never get away.
