I make a real pig of myself at this place. Jamming 3-5 fried shrimp in my mouth at a time. I love everything from the obscure soda collection to the wax lined paper bag so you don't lose any valuable grease! "What else can I get there?" you ask...you can buy cans of lobster bisque! Chocolate pudding! Cookies! But what happened to the crinkle fries? My favorite part was when I was down to the last few fries and I would swirl them around in the remaining grease and salt on the plate. Mm. Mouthwatering.

A very serious night at the Cubby Bear or the Metro and things need to slosh in the stomach soon. Where to go? Greasy spooner? Mc Plugs? NO WAY..." Hey Tom let's hit the kegger!!! That's right..The Fish Keg. Tom Stranich couldn't have said it better so I won't digress. But I have to tell you folks I don't know how many times a gaggle of us would make the drive in Gerald's wagon. Still awake and on the edge from the night before. Dealing with the traffic just to get a pound or two of the best was a small price to pay for the end result. No matter how much we would get...the fish never make it home with us. At times, yes, we would turn the wagon around and go back because we forgot the coleslaw.

The Fish Keg
You would think moving to San Francisco would make your seafood jones a little easier to deal with. Wrongo, pie face and thanks for playing. The Fish Keg is still thee #1 spot for take out seafood and fish on the planet. (Where else can you get Maurice Lenell cookies with your perch and potato salad?) I have been eating there since 1963 and will probably make it my last meal as well. A loaf of bread, a pound of scallops, and thou beside me. There's no where to sit, so the parking lot to the west of the building is where it all happens. I have eaten in that lot in all seasons, whether rain or snow. I'm still trying to match that "alien lake green" paint job on the walls for my kitchen but can't get the right shade. I have been in San Francisco for 10 years now and still miss going there. (I guess growing up in Rogers Park has its advantages.) I tell everyone I know that will be visiting Chicago to hit the "Keg" if they truly want to enjoy themselves. I haven't been back to Chicago for 7 or 8 years and am glad to see that it is still in operation. I miss it terribly. I have even thought of Fish Keg West, an idea to expand here in the Bay Area, but the economic climate won't allow for it. It would probably end up like Pizzeria Uno here in Cupertino, a sad, sad, copy of the original in Chicago, but with really awful food. Better no copy at all than a bad one. Tom Stranich
