Centerstage: You have the wrong phone number posted for The Black Orchid. This number is disconnected.

Just came back from a "Second City" performance that was a complete waste of money. The performers seemed like first week students and audience members were actually falling asleep at tables. They called it improv, but actually, it was rehearsed - the audience would call out an idea, and then they would follow up with a rehearsed version of what they wanted the audience to say. This stage gives Second City a bad name. It was a nice theatre area, so if you are seeing a concert, you might be pleased. However, don't count on seeing anything but horrible comedy here.

The Black Orchid is a very intimate venue with dim lighting and a swanky appearance. I recently saw Liz Phair perform there and was impressed by the casualness and openness of the environment. Everything seemed to be tastefully done from the mood lighting to the intricately detailed portions of the ceiling tiles in copper. The overall sound (although this was an acoustic performance) was quite good and the service of the staff was excellent. They offer a good choice of drinks and a fair menu of food items. It is a "first come first served" seating arrangement, so go early to get a good seat. However, be prepared to sit next to a complete stranger. But that's part of the fun isn't it?! Overall experience, 4.5/5.
