While the zucchini/portobello enchiladas were delicious, the service was horrendous - it seemed as if the server was also the cook, dishwasher, and host. Our waiter rarely appeared, and when he did, it was rather difficult to get him to bring us anything.

In my opinion, the $6.00 corkage fee was too much.

On the night we first visited Caliente in July, it must have been 80 degrees outside and even hotter inside because the air conditioning was not working. I almost walked out immediately, but the food on the tables looked and smelled so good and the patrons looked so comfortable that we stayed. I did not regret my decision, even though I was drenched by the time I left.

We began the meal by sharing the triple empanadas and the house salad. The empanadas were better than any I have had in Chicago. My friend then ordered braised pork with cactus and I had chicken in pumpkin seed mole. Both entrees we served with the best rice I ever tasted! The check for this feast was only $41.00 + tax. By the time we finished eating (and drinking - Caliente is byob so we brought a bottle of wine), I would have sworn I was dining in an unnamed Latin American country at the home of friends. I love this little restaurant!

I'm not the type of person that will go out of my way to review a restaurant. I loved this place. It has a cozy atmosphere. The food was wonderful. I had chicken with a pumpkin sauce, rice and beans. It wasn't a lot of food but it was satisfying in its flavor. I savored every bite.

    I'm going back!
