I have never seen such rude restaurant staff in my life. When they realized no serving plates were on our table, they bluntly asked us, "where are your plates?", as if we hid them on purpose. Then they forgot a spider roll we ordered. When we reminded them, the sushi chef insisted that she made it and the waitress went back and forth to check with us three times as if we were the ones who made a mistake. While I acknowledge that it was a busy Friday night, it's extremely rude and insulting to have come back three times to ask if we had mis-spoken. No apologies were offered from the restaurant. When the spider roll did come, the waitress inserted it in front of my friend's face between his chest and his serving plate.

Anyone who claims this is the "best sushi" they've ever had needs to explore more sushi restaurants. I've been to many and this ranks right at the bottom. The main reason: any sushi place that fills their rolls with cucumber filler and minimal fish is off my list. It's my litmus test of whether or not a sushi restaurant is the real deal or just there to service the uninformed or the newbies.

While the atmosphere was good, and the individual pieces thoroughly enjoyable, the rolls were enough of a disappointment for me to advise any true sushi aficionado to steer clear. This is a place for sushi "lightweights" who can handle Tempura and Teriyaki and the occasional California Roll. It's not for the hardcore sushi lovers who truly love their sushi (unless you're a hardcore cucumber enthusiast -- the by all means, visit the place).

For the price, we could have eaten twice the amount at Midori and walked away far more satisfied.

This place is fantastic!! The chef/owner is so friendly and welcoming. Though it may not be as trendy as its neighbors, it does offer some of the best fish I've ever had. And after all, isn't that what sushi is really about? I would definately reccomend Hama Matsu. The chirasi/sashimi is amazing.

LOVE this place! Our favorite "upscale" sushi joint around. Fantastic atmosphere, and the chef is a real fun guy - his favorite thing is to make something "off menu," so tell him what ingredients you like in sushi and he will surprise and delight you!!!

Although I did not make my way into the cute, beckoning resturaunt until a few days ago, my curiousity and presence of money paid off. My meal was absolutely flavorful and delicious. I recommend their entree of dumplings with noodles. Their sushi, which was prepared in front of me (at the bar) was fresh and the constant humor and kindness from both the owner and the workers made my dinner highly enjoyable. I will definitely be dragging my friends there for excuses to indulge.

Hama Matsu is a delight! After spending a year in Japan (and not really wanting to leave), I was thrilled to return to Chicago to find Hama Matsu. The food is of excellent quality and is very resonably priced. I epecially recommend the scrumptious king crab. The decor is very cozy and really looks like some of my favorite places in Japan. For now, it's BYOB, but there is a liquor store on the corner with a surprisingly good sake selection. The staff at Hama Matsu is welcoming and very gracious. When I'm feeling "homesick" for Japan, I head for Hama Matsu!
