George Dunn National was an absolute gem! I live in Florida and have had this on my list to play for 20 years. I played at the end of July 2008 first tee time in the morning and will tell you that I am an absolute stickler for course conditions and a staff that will be straight up. The staff advised that the course was in "darn good" shape when I called to reserve. The course was a 9 of 10, GREAT layout with many pin locations on the fabulously contoured, very fast greens. Tee's, fairways and bunkers were in great shape and the golf course is just a beautiful traditional must play. Anyone that doesn't enjoy this place doesn't get the game. I will play it again when I return to Chicago for sure!

I think Dunne is the best Public Golf course in Chicago. There is no better challenge in town. It is a great "golfers" course. If you are a 20, don't bother, you will spend all day in fescue and crappy bunkers. Get out early, and pace is never an issue. I have played my share of top rated courses and very few match the layout and challenge that Dunne poses. I highly reccommend it to <10 handicaps

This is the 4th season the course has been managed by Billy Casper. In the last 3 years the condition issues have all been resolved, albeit the bunkers are still an on-going project (10 bunkers have been renovated so far).

The postings on this website you are looking at now are not representative of the experience people receive at the course.

To get a better perspective on what you can expect at National you should check out www.golfcourse.com/search/cc_display.cfm?clubid=11957&courseid=13103

A couple of notes - National will be hosting a US Open qualifier in 2007, has been upgraded from a 3 star to a 4.5 star rating in Places to Play, received the only Perfect 10 by GolfChicago magazine, etc..

I agree with many of the previous posts....The round was long 5hrs+. Some conditioning still needed, but no flooded sand traps. Still a goof deal at $40 with the coupons they have every Monday in the Times

This is a real golfer's course. No pretty flower beds, no gimicky bridges/hazards/obstructed views, no artificial looking ponds. Just plainly great layout. I have played this course off and on for 12 years. Past several years, it looked terrible but this year, it appears in a generally good shape. Much work to be done, but it is still the best thinking men's golf course that will kick anyone's butt for taking a risk AND NOT DELIVERING THE SHOT. I wish I won a lottery to buy this place and shape this course up. Then it may be good enough to host a PGA tournament. (This may be too tough a course for LPGA events.)

    George Dunne

*Sand traps under water or in terrible shape($61)

*Time to complete round of play- 5 hours 15 mins($61)

*Add on the late start of 30 min-6hrs at the course.($61)

*Knowing you'll never be back- PRICELESS

There are so many better deals to play a more well condidtioned course, don't bother with this one.

Best course i've played in years. Tight tree-lined farways and greens surrounded in sand. Better than Waters Edge.

This is my third year playing golf and my second season at this course and I have to say they are doing the best they can in the given situation. The course has been getting better with every week that goes by and the greens are better cared for not to mention the the bunkers have become more playable since they put fresh sand in them and they are starting to put a drainage system in them too! This takes time and it's not an over night project. I know that some day I will not be able to afford to play there so for now it's the best bang for my buck. As for me the only thing that I could complain about is-- they need to space out the players more and have a ranger with some guts to keep people playing faster. The course is great and you could not ask for a better course to play on for the price you pay. I have played on shorter courses that cost me more money and not as hard a course then George dunne. To the staff there I have to say: keep up the great work your doing on the course, you come a long way since you took over and I look forward to playing more golf there in the future. It's one tough course.

This used to be such an awesome course to play, I have watched it get worse and worse every year. Now it has hit an all time low as far as how the management is running it. The green fees are extremely high priced for the condition of the course. They are still charging prices as if it were still an elite course, which it surely isn't. The Driving Range is a travesty. It's closed on Wednesday nights so the can pick up golf balls so they can cut the grass on Thursday morning. Have you ever heard of such a thing? What a joke that is. There is no grass teeing areas on the range and most of the time the artifical tees don't even have a rubber to to use. The driving range balls are the same ones they have been using for the last 10 years. I was personally asked not to use a driver on the range because I was putting them into the trees. I say if your range is only 290 yards long and people are hitting into the trees make it longer, don't ask people not to hit a driver. It's driving range for petes sake not a chipping range. On a scale of 1 thru 10 I would give the whole place a 5 which is being easy on them. The need to stop living on their reputation from the late 80's and early 90's and do some damn work to the course.

The course was in terrible shape. Probably the worse i've ever played on. Practically ever bunker had approximately 6 inches of water in it. The drainage is terrible, leaving nothing but mud.

The fairways and rough alike were complete saturated. I know the area has been hit pretty hard with rain lately, but i've played other courses in the immediate area and they don't seem to have the problems National has.

The tee boxes and fairways were poorly maintained.

By far, the worst golfing experience i've come across in a long time.

Don't waste your time and money.

    John
