Let me say up front that I'm a long term vegetarian who loves spicy food & good wine. I've been to Green Zebra maybe 8 times over the last 5 years. Last night, however, was definitely the best meal I've ever eaten there. I took my time with the menu & then took a risk with my choice of wine, and was blown away with the resulting combinations. 1. The caramelized endive, blood orange & beet salad which was totally wonderful, especially paired with the spatlese reisling. The sweetness of the wine & the sweet charred endive were a wonderful combination. 2. The next course, ricotta gnocchi, was surprisingly filling & tasty, and I was surprised at how well the wine stood up to that course. 3. My final course, the mejool dates, roasted eggplant & coconut custard, was delicate and simply out of this world when teamed with the reisling. 4. For dessert we shared the vanilla cannoli with lemon butter & blood orange sorbet, and a warm chocolate tart with cardamon icecream with a glass of Californian Voignier Doux. The cannoli were unlike anything you've eaten from an Italian pasrty store: they were lacy with a fluffy vanilla coconut filling that was really good. Delicious sorbet too! The wine was at its best with the chocolate tart which was rich & silky & so delicious that I actually experienced bodily pain. Fabulous, scented cardamon icecream! What a fantastic meal and good service last night, too. Well done, Green Zebra!

Gotta let you guys know: If you're a vegetarian or vegan, eating at the Green Zebra is not ethical.

A funny thing happened to me the other day. I met the owner of the Green Zebra, Sue Kim-Drohomyrecky. She was over at one of her other restaurants. It's called Custom House and it's on Dearborn.

I don't usually like to publicly whip people but I gotta say "How the hell do you own a Veg restauraunt and a place across town that serves veal and foie gras? WTF?!?!

Don't eat at the Green Zebra for ethical or compassionate reasons. Voting with your dollars has zero effect when it goes into the coffers of the Drohomyrecky clan. Who would cut up and serve a baby Koala Bear's spleen if it had a good profit margin.

In the interest of full disclosure I'll let you know I've eaten here twice. Never again.

As way of introduction, I am a foodie who happens to work as a consultants, which allows me to dine at some of the best restaurants in the country 100-150x/year. I've been looking forward to going to Green Zebra since it opened, and have had many reservations over the years which have fallen through. Well, I now live a few blocks from the restaurant, so I was extremely excited when my wife booked this for my birthday. Sadly, this was the only bright spot of our dining experience.

Service and timing SUCKED. I have experienced all sorts of service, but this was in a league of its own. Not to be cruel, but our waitress also had horrible, gum-disease scented breath, which is the last thing you want to catch whiff of prior to dining at an upper class restaurant. As for the food, it was good but not necessarily memorable. If you're a vegetarian looking for a nice restaurant, the you may want to try Green Zebra. If you're looking for an upscale dining experience, then I'd go to one of the other 100 better restaurants in the city.

Fresh. Smart. Chicago with a spit of unique. Unassumingly sophisticated. Situated "away", this eatery draws an eclectic bunch.

Got a little nervous as the cab driver kept going and going from our hotel on Michigan Avenue but it was worth the trip! The celery root with black truffle soup and the blue cheese molten cake are 5 star for sure. I really want both receipes. This is a must off the beaten path culinary adventure.

The good side: food itself was superb. Amazing use of spices, texture combinations, great presentation. It was time to have a vegetarian option in this meat-centered city. The place is a lovely modern, sleek, minimalist art work. Overall a great place.

The bad side: I thought food was a bit on the expensive side. Dinner for two: 6 plates, 2 martinis, 2 glasses of wine, 2 desserts = $132 + tip. Plates are rather small, even for tapas standards though they are not tapas plates. So you definitely don't want to make plans for dinner here after skipping prior meals or else you might find yourself looking for something to eat in your fridge when you get back home. Tables are small, so don't order more than 2 things at once or you might have to hold something on your lap -they might not have enough room in the kitchen either, so they bring out everything at once and make it fit on your table. Ambiance was a little on the sterile side; how about some background jazz or lounge music? candle lights?
