As other reviews have noted, the basements smells like cat urine. Those of us that do not like cats, would prefer not to have to endure this smell. I am not sure how the kitty litter box meets health code for a place of business either.

While I do not object to books being overpriced as some reviewers have noted, I have another objection. Unlike other book stores in Chicago, Myopic seems to have a ceiling price of $10 no matter how many good books you bring them. I would not recommed selling books here.

At this store, we examined claims made by previous online reviewers:

    * "Overpriced books" - Store carries mostly mass-market books. Objection seems to be many could be bought for $0.01 online. However, those reviewers do not consider overhead cost of operating a storefront. True in that no advantage to this store if price is the customer's criterion. * Mandatory bag check - In this case seems justifiable given sketchy location. One person raised a counter-argument that store employees should not necessarily be entrusted with valuables. * "Employees too surly to work in fast food" - Accurate. We witnessed unacceptable behavior which would get an employee fired from food service jobs, but is tolerated in this store. Consistent history of customer complaints of rudeness, ineptitude, bad attitude. * "Store smells like urine" - There was a foul odor, concentrated in rear section of ground level. Previous reviews suggested the cats which roam the store may urinate and/or vomit under bookshelves. * "Store is dirty or ramshackle" - Place seemed not often cleaned. An area in upper level was covered with broken pieces of wood. Books themselves were not dirty. Some construction dubious but not obviously structurally unsound or dangerous. * Idiosyncratic policies - Signs were posted stating "price of unshelved books will be raised by $1.00". Gives the impression of laziness, and pettiness, much like other observations of staff's attitude.

3 floors of books that are all in order by subject and author. Not the store for whining yuppies who can't live without a cellphone or a personal guide who picks up after them. A place for people who can read and enjoy books. Hey Nikita! Go back to the suburbs!

This place is a waste of time. It is impossible to browse the books because it is so messy and disheveled and the creepy bookshelves look like they're about to fall over onto you. Most of the books could be found at a chain bookstore brand new for the same price and the books that are hard to find i'm sure could be found online for cheaper. What's worse is that this place obviously doesn't give a shit about their customers. First of all, the store has signs up everywhere saying that if you put a book out of order they will mark up the price of that book another dollar. It's like "hello, get over yourselves" you're a store! you have customers! it's not all about the associates and their comfort. There was no one walking around the store to help people and the only two workers i saw were standing behind the counter chatting with each other the whole time. My boyfriend got a phone call and they told him he had to take it outside because they have a no cellphone policy. Okay, how is a quiet phonecall different from you talking to each other for an hour about what kind of tofu is best for the environment? Give me a break. And the most comical part is the sign on the door that says "please pull or push the door closed behind you, we're cold!!" yeah, well i have news for you: you're also ASSHOLES!
