I'm an avid fan of Indian food, and I'm used to some dynamite restaurants and counters in South Florida where I lived for 25 years. Essence of India is a scam by comparison. The "Indian Chai" listed on the menu is actually a bag of tea, and is not house-made masala chai. It was served cool enough that I could have poured it over my neck. Are they serious? The naan appears to be the grocery store freezer variety, cut in preformed triangles that you heat on a cookie sheet. Rice is $4! You get one plate for two people, which is almost insulting. Portion sizes can fit in the palm of one hand and cost upwards of $12. The recipes aren't exciting or even good, and the meat is questionable. I know of of one person being hospitalized by the goat. The rogan josh is the worst I have ever tasted, and it did not actually taste like the dish it purported to be. I would NOT recommend this place to anyone. The prices are outlandish ($20 min. per person) and the portions are so, so tiny -- definitely not the norm for Indian food.

For Indian in Tally, you have either Samrat or Essence of India; they're both genuinely terrible. Learn to cook your own at home, these places are a waste of money.

i already knew of the hefty prices since their menu is in the window, but as an avid indian food fan that moved less than 2 blocks away, i knew i'd try it soon enough. the food is ok. and i do mean just ok. the portions are REALLY small considering how awfully expensive it is... the vegetarian dishes are all at LEAST 10 dollars... you can imagine where that puts the seafood dish prices. you also PAY for rice (not cheap either) and bread. it really is sad when they must know you can get even more authentic food on devon (which, incidentally, is not THAT far north from lincoln square)... for SO much less. come on essence... be fair with your pricing! you're not in the loop, river north or gold coast... don't make me act like one of those customers either!

I was rather disappointed. Being near my home, I was looking forward to a good Indian food alternative rather than driving to Devon. I found it to be an attempt at blending some American fish and seafood dishes with some Indian spice unsuccesfully. The spices seemed not to blend as well as I am used to. I reccommend you make the trek to Devon.

I was pleasantly surprised by the flavors, service and ambience of Essence of India after reading the reviews. Given that you may find cheaper Indian food on Devon avenue, the nan bread was flavorful and every dish our table of 8 tasted was delicious. The owner made great efforts to ensure that we had a wonderful experience.

There is no longer a buffet here. Everything is a la carte, so eating a full meal here without a friend is always a 20 dollar plus proposition. $13 for about 4 oz. of chicken. $4 for rice (are you kidding me?), and another $3 for bread (which is free at most restaurants). To me, this place is taking advantage of being the only Indian restaurant in the area, and they should be ashamed of themselves for this type of gouging.
