Unfortunately, this cafe has new ownership. Nothing is homemade (they have no information about ingredients in the pre bought food either so don't bother asking). The new owner is very very very rude. When you go in there it seems like you are annoying him by wanting to buy something. Often he will not even make eye contact with you and only says "YES?" when you stand at the counter. The last breakfast sandwich i bought was burnt. (They probably didn't care because I was taking it to go and would only find out after I was home.) Also, the new owner has no problem yelling at employees in front of customers making everyone feel uncomfortable. At his other café in evanston they have lids with straw holes for iced drinks. Here, they do not provide that luxury. Good luck finding napkins or milk for your coffee, you might get yelled at.

I used to have to leave Ennui when the smoke got too bad. The staff was generally unfriendly, with a couple of exceptions. It was dirty and cluttered and none of the tables stood flat on the floor. I guess you could call it artsy.

Nowadays, it's clean, friendly, the tables stand up straight, there are more food options available, and every time I go in, it looks like they've improved something. While I understand the "charm" of the old Ennui, the new ownership makes it much more comfortable. It's still my favorite coffee shop in the city. And I can breathe in there now, which is a huge plus.

Came to Ennui a few times before and many times after new owner. All I know is that every week it gets better--the bathroom gets cleaner, the walls less grubby, the floor swept. It was dirty, dark, depressing, hot place. Now it's clean, cheerful, European-looking, and AWESOME for studying. Still live music and artsy stuff at night on weekends. AND THE HUMMUS PLATE ROCKS. I have seen **NOTHING** but improvments since the new owner came.

Never went to Ennui before the new owner but I go there now to study all the time and it's a great place. The crowd is diverse and interesting, the music is good, but not so loud you can't listen to headphones, the food is very good and the hours are better than other local places. It's chill, pleasant, neighborhood-y and unpretentious and the owner is an awesome guy. Highly recommended for relaxed good times.

Ennui used to be a hip place to go to. They had a really good local Jazz band there on Sundays where you could hear live music for free. The people who owned the place sold it without telling anyone to this clueless moron who cut out the live music and the artsy atmosphere. It now feels more like a Greek restaurant than a hip coffeehouse. I suggest going elsewhere at least until the moron that now owns it gets a clue!
