Charlie is a freaking genius. The menu never overwhelms in volume, just in the difficulty of picking one dish over the other and another. Often find myself wishing there was a 3-sided coin to flip - and that's just for the starters! The cuisine is country French, and chef notably features a particular region of France for a few weeks and then jumps to feature another. Staff all great. No one will steer you wrong, and no one is afraid to offer their opinion. Beer list is as easy to live with as the wine list. Ask for James to deliver wine by the glass per course and you will not be disappointed. Fish dishes always stand out. So do game and organ meats. Pork to die for. Great steak preparations each week. Probably the best prix-fixe bargain in metro Chicagoland. Desserts march across an incredible range. You cannot go wrong here. PS - try the Martini du Bon Docteur

PHENOMENAL! I cannot understand why it has taken me so long to find Chicago's premier source of rustic French. Let the sommelier choose the wine!

My wife and and have visited the restaurant twice, once for regular dinner & once for a wine dinner. The first time was excellent, the quality of food and the costs. The 2nd time for the 5 course dinner paired with wines was even better!!! This place is a must! Because of our experiences, we'll try not to ever miss the monthly wine dinners. Lastly, even though it is not a large place, the service and hospitality rival the other five star experiences that we've had.

My wife & I have been going to Cafe Matou for several years, and we think it is excellent; quiet room, tables apart enough for conversation, good service, and excellent food. We have friends who used to live in Chicago, visit several times a year, love French food, and always ask to meet us there!
