After reading some very mixed reviews around the web, I was a little bit worried about going here. However, I was pleasantly surprised. We went with a group of 5 around 7 pm on a Friday night and were seated right away. Service was a tad on the slow side, but friendly. The food came just as ordered and was very tasty, not the best burger I've had in Chicago, but still very good. I will definitely give it another try in the future.

I live near this place and I am astounded at its popularity. The place is packed just about every night of the week and waits can be a half hour or more. I don't like waiting so I didn't bother to go in until they ahd been in business at least a few months. I still don't know what the big deal is, but I have to say I like it. the mood isn't really 'merry,' but it's relaxed and fun. Even though it's very 'gay,' [you know, with the music and the TV shows on the screens and the staff and the decor,etc...] there are an awful lot of families with kids who go there and everyone seems to have a good time. Not that the place puts the circuses above the breads - the food is really good, imaginative, reasonably priced [hardly anything is over $10] and this being Chicago, it fills you up! They don't try to do too much - it's just burgers and girl drinks - but what they do, they do well. I'm still amazed at how popular it is, but then again, i'm there every week now, so that's how they stay so successful.

My partner and I looked forward to our meal. Afterwards, reading the raves here surprised me. We waited 30 minutes (after a promised 20-minute wait). The host pissed off others who stopped to inquire about plans for the upstairs. They were basically told no info was forthcoming unless they dined with them that night. I suspect they lost at least 8 future customers with that attitude from the host. Our server was attentive and pleasant. Our food, however, was merely adequate. My partner's burger was undercooked, but he was hungry & ate it anyway. The restaurant was out of fries, so he was given an uninteresting tossed salad as a side. I had an Asian salad as my entree. All the differentiated it from the side salad was it’s size and presence of a few orange segments and fried wonton strips. Other than that, not so tasty, and not even any Asian vegetables to liven it up. I had asked for my dressing on the side. Instead, it came with no dressing at all and I had to flag down our server to get the dressing (which took a few minutes). We wanted to really like this place. The atmosphere is enjoyable, staff is friendly, but the food merely "ok." The restaurant had only been open for 3 weeks, so we’ll give it another chance. They'll have to do much better in the kitchen to win us away from other Andersonville faves. Burgers at T's down the street are much better & often on special & their drinks are cheaper.

We had been waiting in anticipation for Hamburger Mary's to open since the twins first came into andersonville and began patronizing our business. I have eaten there twice now, the first a guacamole, bacon, and jack burger the size of my head with seasoned fries, which I couldn't even finish; and the second--a veggie burger slathered in mushrooms and cheddar with a flavorful potato salad.

Both meals were substantial and delicious. The servers though overwhelmed have been attentive and friendly. The environment has a cute ambiance--not overly lit which allowed me the ability to shove everything in my big fat mouth, but at the same time I did not have to worry about tons of people watching me.

The only downfall was that I was too full to enjoy a huge drink off their drink list. I cannot wait until their upstairs is ready!

Hamburger Mary's Chicago is a must visit joint. I have been to the one in Cincinnati also and it was great food, fun and drinks! Me and another friend were fortunate enough to be the very first patrons of this restaurant at 6pm on June 1, 2006. You must go there and the men's bathroom is done in "Marilyn"!! Then hop over to Atmosphere for a drink or two with the locals in Andersonville.
