I recently bought two slices of cake from cafe colao. Much to my surprise and disgust, when I got home, the slice were molded! I was utterly disgusted and will never visit cafe colao again. Pastries are not fresh but quite sickening.

Cafe Colao used to be a very nice establishment to visit before the current owners took possession over it. what was once a nice generational family owned bakery turned into a possible chain of Puerto Rican food eateries that is now owned by the founders of Nellie's, which is conveniently down the block, who are turning it into a place that a young male Latino is starting to resent visiting. The staff, and I mean the only constant face i see at the register, is actually the better part of the bakery, the prices have gone up to the point that as a high school student i cannot afford to buy a simple sandwich without handing over 5 dollars and only getting 37 cents back, seems like an anti gentrification location is gentrifying against those students that do not have the same pay rate as a business employee, not to mention that it is almost impossible to dine there because it is always crowded with the so called community leaders that just sit there taking up space. I never had this problem 2 years ago under the previous owner. Cafe Colao's new slogan should be, Cafe Colao, where your not welcome as much unless if your in the "in crowed" and have political influence over the community.

I moved away over twenty years ago never thinking I would be back. During that time I lived and Puerto Rico and enjoy everything it offers including what I think is one of the best coffees in the world (Cafe Yaucono). I return to Chicago and I'm invited to Cafe Colao. To my surprise I find real fresh brewed Puerto Rican coffee and delectable pastries. The establishment is slightly cramped but you quickly forget when amongst friends in a very inviting and unique atmosphere. Every chance I get I go to Cafe Colao to take in their food, coffee and pastries. When there don't forget to ask about Nellies and their breakfast brunch where you will have an incredible breakfast not to mention the best 'avena con coco' outside of grandmas kitchen.
