Finally, there's an easier way to get the best tres leches cake in town. Bombon Cafe not only has the exquisite pastry selection of the original Bombon Bakery in Pilsen, but also offers a full menu of tortas, tamales, quesadillas and salads. The new location enjoys a sunny space and the decor is imaginative -- bright yellow walls, menu chalkboards mounted on old doorframes -- without being gimmicky. More important, the food is fantastic. Quesadillas, served in sets of 3, are small, delicate, and flaky with a host of fillings heavy on the vegetables and judicious with the cheese. And the tortas! These sandwiches are served on the bakery's own fresh rolls, and you can choose from half a dozen standard combinations that are like the dreams of a hungry gourmet, or invent your own, and experiment with endless possible combinations of tender, perfectly spiced meats and crisp veggies. There's a cooler full of sodas, Mexican and American, by the door, but take the opportunity to have one of the flavored waters they feature, like canteloup, hibiscus, or horchata. And don't forget to have desert! You can't go wrong with one of their tres leches cakes, which, in their little aluminum cups, look like puddings, or you can split one of the miniature cakes with a friend. But be warned, if you have the cake, you will have to come back!
