I really enjoy the place. It's a very cozy spot with good entertainment.Especially for the band called The Natural Rhythm Band. Those guy play eveything. Not just blues. They play old school music that take you back to the days of house parties and real slow dancing. I thought they were a big hit and did justice to the place. They should be there more often.

I enjoy the NEW Checker board lounge. I admit that I was a little prejudice at first, cause ain't nothin like the real thing baby! I had been anticipating the reopening of the old building on 43rd and Vernon. This building on E. Harper Ct. used to be a pet store. It is much more spacious and cleaner than the old building. The old building was more like a real Juke Joint. it was taken out of the heart of the Bronzeville area. A fact that I was not happy about.

As an occasional visitor from abroad, I can only get to the New Checkerboard Lounge jazz sessions a couple of times a year. I enjoy the venue but the owner's blues orientation is obvious. Okay! I can live with that as I am a blues fan too but one has to be a detective to find out who is playing whatever the music. Getting a couple of posters out to the local record stores like Dusty Groove would get the word out to more fans who are prepared to spend bucks on listening to live music.

I was invited by an old high school friend who was playing there last night. Diane Ellis and Jazzy Ladies. I really enjoyed the atmosphere, it was relaxing and the music was outstanding. If you enjoy Jazz or Blues you have got to visit the Checkerboard Lounge. More advertising would not hurt. This was my first time there, but never my last.

I have spent many nights around the house with my woman wondering what to do on the weekend. Im tired of the Downtown social night-life (parking, outrages admitions, crowds, etc.) But part of the solution is the Checkerboard. I'm a fan of jazz & house music. I think the Checkerboard should be the cornerstone to more venues on the south side of Chicago.

Outstanding music and a comfortable and relaxing venue!!! Some friends of my daughters go to the Checker Board Lounge every week possible and asked me to join them this past Sunday for the Jazz Session. What a treat! I just wish I lived closer and could go there at least a few times a month for the wonderful live music.

I'm a fairly new comer to the new checkerboard lounge over the last two months been a frequent patronage .I really find the atomsphere to be really good with a friendly environment.Everyone mixes well, sit laugh and talk and really enjoy the great blues bands.I like the idea of the many, many artist that come in and out and share their talent and good voices bellowing out some good old fashion down home blues with a touch of mowtown and audience participation. I really enjoy this place and always give this place props by inviting others to come and hear some really good blues from our local celebities and out of towners. I was also given a schedule for month of september and an upcoming event fot oct.1-7.And were able to purchase advance tickets to shows.I'm certainly glad to have such a place in the neighborhood and close for me to travel without having to go downtown to catch a blue show.MR. Thurman and staff certainly has my business. Thank Mr. Thurman again for a great place to get together and socialize and added bonus of ordering food and delivered right to your table without a long wait for your sandwich or a full course meal from local restaurants.

I have been to several shows and certainly enjoyed them, but one gets the sense that management is not intending to succeed in Hyde Park. What else could explain the fact that as the New Checkerboard approaches its first anniversary, it is still a hassle to try to uncover who is playing and when? Why are there not schedules of shows circulating around Hyde Park and the university? Why are there no listings on centerstage.net, in the Reader, in U.Chicago student papers, etc? I don't get it, but it is certainly a missed opportunity for live music to succeed on the South Side.
