Upon a recent visit to the Zhou Brothers Art Center, I had met one of the artists in the building by the name of Nicholas DePeder who gave me a tour of the building, which as far as art buildings go, is top of the line. If one could close their eyes and imagine 4 floors of artistic bliss, then this is where they would open. Van Gogh and Gauguin had Arles, Chicago has the Zhou B. Center. The 3rd floor is where a dozen artists share a floor of studio spaces, and this is where the artist known as DePeder works. His studio is as one would expect to see from an artist hard at work, scattered with sketches on napkins, paper plates, and of course stacks of drawing pads. Some of the prints and paintings span 10 years and one would think the body of work merits a retrospective, yet he says he has never shown in a gallery. He said he needs to find his "signature style", but if you can imagine Picasso's Blue period, Van Gogh's thick brush strokes, Gauguin's color, Edward Hopper's feeling of isolation and loneliness wrapped up in Leonard DaVinci's studio scattered with his drawings, thoughts and inventions...his name would be Nicholas DePeder.
