We discovered this place by accident many years ago, and what a happy accident it was! As other reviewers have noted, this is primarily a place for Koreans to eat, though I suspect that the waitstaff's seeming indifference has more to do with the language barrier than ethnic prejudice.

But if you can get past the cultural divide, you can enjoy some great food. Korean barbeque is king here, though I have had some of their other dishes (such as bi-bim-bop)and found them tasty. The marinaded beef ribs are probably the most popular (and accessible) choice, though the spicy pork ribs are also tasty (the sauce burns easily, be careful). The numerous side dishes are always a treat, and make eating here tremendous fun.

If you are a newbie, here are a few pointers: You can only cook your own barbeque if two people order it. They cook barbeque orders for one person in the kitchen. The coals are hottest in the center, so at first, scatter your meat around the sides of the firepot. Bek-Se-Ju is a wonderful herbal rice wine that is perfect with the grilled meat. OB, a clean and crisp Korean beer, is also a good choice. Finally, since you are cooking over live coals, be prepared to leave the place smelling like smoke.

Compared to other Korean Restaurants, just average at best. On the plus side, they use real wood charcoal for BBQing the meats, and lots of panchans. On the negative, the panchans were not particularly spicy or interesting. Most dissappointing was the Service, which as is often the case at Korean restaurants, we were treated as something less than desired guests, not being Korean. They paid no attention to us whatsoever, no refill of water until we flagged someone down, no offer to replentish the panchans, no offer of assistance with the BBQ (not that we needed it, but novices would have) -- and, all this even after we displayed our affinity for Korean by ordering Soju (and, even by name -- Jinro SoJu). Much prefer KangNam, as our favorite Korean.

The food is absolutely the best in Chicago. However, if you are a person who's not accostumed to Korean restaurant culture, you might be disappointed with their service. The reasons are first, most likely you're going to have to set up your own silverwares, napkins, and etc. Secondly, you're going to have to help the server to put the side dishes on the table (because they're so many of them). Thirdly, the servers are not as friendly as other restaurants. However, what I want to address here is, that's how Korean restaurants are. They're not mean people at all (I love them actually. I'm one of their regular customers.) and you just have to adjust to new restaurant environment. So just sit and enjoy. I ensure you, it'll be intersting and of course delicious.

It was excellent when I dined in at 1am in the morning in 2002. My roommates and I drove from Champaign for the taste of grilled kalbi.

Now I'm back(from Seattle) about to pay this place another visit.

    I give 6 / 5~
