Dude, you'll be fine. Just be aware that there are guys who do not find it complimentary of other guys ceihkcng them out. Respect their space and you shouldn't have any problems. Unless you're a complete disco queen they are not going to look at you and run after you with pitch forks screaming FAG!! I'm kidding, if you are obviously gay who the hell cares. Avoid DBG. I went to grab my things from my locker in the changing room after a workout and fortunately for me I saw that there was a repair man in the back of the changing area because that's where my locker was. But another lady was not so lucky. Her locker was in the front area and she didn't turn around to see him. It was so darkly lit that you couldn't see there was this man in the back part of the section unless you were back there like I was. Unfortunately the poor woman had taken her clothes off and the repair man said nothing. I didn't see her until she screamed in horror and ran out. Yes this is in the LADIES room. So unless you want to be spied on by perverts -- do NOT join this gym. I change clothes in the bathroom now and will NOT be renewing my membership.

AVOID!!! Unless you want repeated billing problems that cannot (won't) be resolved. This place borders on a criminal enterprise. I;d rather deal with the Gambino crime family than having to deal with their "corporate" office in NYC. If you MUST join, do not use recurring billing. Ask to be billed and then pay with a check, or cash. Pay nothing in advance.

Stay away from this gym. Don't think that David Barton is a cut above New York Sports Clubs or Equinox. It's not. At David Barton, there are complaining instructors, late classes, mistakes with the audio system. Once I went to a class where after struggling with the sound system for twenty minutes the instructor gave up and did a class with no music. Once I went for a class and there never was a class and no one was even able to tell me why. Don't expect better service, treatment or atmosphere than you would get anywhere else. Stay away and save your money. David Barton shows no more appreciation of their customers than New York Sports or Equinox, actually less. I guess they think they're hip and don't need to treat customers well. Some "club"!

I hated the lighting here...hard to feel awake and energized when it's so dark! You can't even see yourself very well in the locker room mirrors. The locker rooms are clean, although sometimes annoying when no matter what time you are there, a cleaning person is waiting for you to move so they can mop the floor, or clean the sink, etc. I wish they had wipes or spray for the machines- they hand-clean them, but who knows how often, and there's no option to do it yourself if someone sweaty was on before you (or to be polite to the next person).

DBG is fantastic! I love the lighting, cleanliness, and coziness of this gym. The staff members are friendly. It's never very crowded. It's sooo clean! The locker room products, bumble & bumble, are such a convienence. I never have to wait to use the equipment. It's literally a second home to me! I sampled other gyms but nothing came close to the one. I highly recommend this gym...don't be intimidated by the ads! My sales person, Jeff, was amazing, friendly, and just downright cool!

finally, a gym that appeals to my senses AND my needs!
first, floor to ceiling windows, offering a view of open air and water welcomed me. the feeling continued when i was greeted by the first staffer at the check in desk, and then by erik mejia, who was informative, not high pressure, and super friendly without being weirdly familiar.
the lighting: low enough to be calming, but not so dark to be dungeon like. olfactory:great! no old gym shoe/chlorine aromas. music: just loud enough to provide rhythm without drowning out conversation.
locker rooms: clean, dimly lit, with an aromatherapy room and sauna, shampoos,lotions, towels all provided.
my trainer, mike, was amazing. low key, addressed all my specific concerns with a well rounded, full body workout that left me well educated and nicely exhausted. i can't say enough good things about him.
machines: plentiful,clean and well maintained, tons of free weights as and a great range of cardio choices. a huge variety of classes in pilates, yoga, spin, etc. are available.
for ambiance, attitude, and performance, i couldn't ask for more. plus, after you've worked out, you can sink into their cushy chairs and spend some time just letting the view do its wonders.
