Happy Anniversary to Chef Theo, Meghan, and the staff at Terragusto! Congratulations on a job well done in your first year. You were recently named one of the top 10 best new Chicago restaurants in 2006. Once you iron out some of the small issues that every new business encounters, you will definitely be THE best, not one of the best! Keep up the good work!

Great find in my new neighborhood. High quality food paired with non-pretentious service in a plain wrapper. Could use some soundproofing when the place is full, but worth the trip. PS- call ahead for reservations, which are kept as promised.

I moved on to the Bolognese which was, as promised, "hearty and delighful." I don't know if that was actually said, but it was implied, and certainly lived up to it. The noodles are perfection in a bowl and the sauce just adds that more more to it. I don't think you'd go wrong with any pasta choice.
As an entree I tried the special, that night it was King Salmon. Cooked beautifully, but over-salted. I'm not gonna play around with something witty to say, the simple truth is that it was too salty. Oh, but how could I forget about that side of polenta. That single-handedly made up for any misgivings of the fish. The polenta is spectacular.
Dessert was chocolate creme brulee. Sounds good, but definitely needs work. The brulee was perfect, the creme was kinda gloppy. Not too sweet which is nice, but needs to be more smooth.
Anyway, I've ranted for awhile and I know I've pointed out some "bad" points, but all things concidered I'd go back everyday if I could afford it. It really is damn good. And damn good for your health and the environment. More power to them.
One last point. Excellent wait staff very courtious and exceedingly normal yet knowledgable. They don't try to put on airs which seems like that's what traditional Italian family dining should be like.

It's rough being the first one to post a review about a fairly new place. I'd imagine it's even more rough to be the owners/cooks of the new place being posted about. But, I honestly don't think Terragusto will have too bumpy of a career. All things concidered, my experience was excellent. I'm going to knit-pick cause some constructive criticism is always good to hear, but please, don't get me wrong, GO TO THIS RESTAURANT, it's worth it.
The physical restaurant is set up in a kind of clunky fashion (it used to be coffee shop, and the bar, the most prominent fixture in the room, still commands the majority of the space). But, even with this the setting still seems intimate. My girlfiend and I brought some wine with us and, to my dismay, it was served to us in upright, juice style glasses. No big deal. The wine was still good.
My first course was the Hay and Straw soup. I didn't realize chicken noodle soup could actually be delicious. This was a light soup, not knocking you out Emeril style, with a bunch of crap for Xtreme flavor, but a nice, wholesome blend of good, homemade ingredients. Xtremely recommended.
Next part posted separately.
