We have a new show opening 5/1/2009:

    Communication is Overrated

In this age of information, this exhibit questions the benefit of “creating a dialog”. Featuring installations, paintings, printed materials useless signage and a large-scale “textwork” wall painting, the exhibit explores the power and limitations of the act of message, and the effect of information bombardment. Includes Bob Buchholz, Diane Green, Kathryn Born, Annie Heckman, and others. Opening on May 1, 7:00-10:00 PM. And includes spoken word performances at 8:00 and 9:15 PM.

Refuge: Center for Artists in Recovery was founded in 2006 as an organization for visual artists who are active in the process of recovery from drug and alcohol addiction (and those that support them). This year they have expanded their mission to include all addictions, along with emotional disorders and survivors of trauma. Refuge seeks to be an important bridge between the art and the recovery communities, and to showcase established artists who display boundless creativity, while abstaining from the use of mind-altering substances.

I had recently participated in the self-portrait workshop. To my surprise, it was way cooler and more inspiring than I originally had anticipated. The Refuge is a place that I thank God for. It is a place that has helped me re-light the fire of my own creativity as well as expand my network of recovering friends. Thank you Bill for having such a place. Thank you Julie for introducing me to it. Thanks Doug for all the work put into it. I look forward to the "Me Me Me Exhibition" and I had a blast at the holiday party!

The current 12"x12" exhibition features a wide range of trained pros to some very unique outsider artists. The 2 requirements for exhibition was: everything submitted on a 12" square surface and, the artists be in recovery from drug or alcohol addiction. The images, words and recovery message becomes strong and moving statement of recovery. Exhibition moves to the Skokie Public Library for the month of January 2007.
