This Mexican bakery carries every sweet bread, pastry and cake to satisfy a sweet tooth – but if you’re looking for a plain ole baguette to hold your sandwich together, you've come to the wrong place. Yet despite the somewhat misleading name and generic sign over the entrance that just reads "Bakery," the little bakeshop that first opened in Chicago's "La Villita" (Little Village) now has 11 locations.
This location is tucked in a small shopping strip, with decor that looks a little more corporate than you'd expect from an old family owned bakery, but luckily the aroma of fresh baked sweets leaves a stronger impression before you even have a chance to swing open the door.
Rows of churros, conchas and galletas are neatly stacked behind the glass, with most items for under a dollar and a selection of desserts, like flan, Jell-o or chocolate strawberries – who could resist mixing and matching? Don't forget your coffee (for a buch), the conchas can be a little dry. But ask about the daily selection of cakes. It's really the cakes that made La Baguette what it is.
The bakery offers a wide selection of Mexican favorites for carry out, like tres leches cake (soaked in sweet milk), or Mexican chocolate cake, with prices starting at $25, (or $2 for a slice). The place also offers custom-made birthday and wedding cakes.
