Remember that scene in Disney's "Lady and the Tramp" where the canine couple dines on spaghetti and meatballs in the alley outside an Italian restaurant, serenaded by "Bella Noche"? The same feeling of romance surrounds Angelina, the date destination for any well-informed Chicagoan. But, instead of a measly plate of vermicelli, red sauce and ground beef, the entrees excite and reward the appetite, while the interior boasts candles, a chandelier and beautiful paintings. You could call that a slight upgrade from our favorite doggies' street-side seating.
Those who arrive before the restaurant's daily 5:30 p.m. dinner opening time will likely find others waiting; old friends and lovers, co-workers or families, the neighborhood cherishes this quaint little spot. If you do get there early, you may be able to grab one of the much-coveted window seats. Though, if the time and temperature prove ideal, dine outside to capture the sunset over Lakeview. The cuisine seamlessly blends the traditional with the contemporary, and it's all done with style and grace. You'll find Italian standards such as eggplant parmesan and risotto but also items like salsiccia ethica, spicy Italian sausage with pine nuts and golden raisins and balsamic reduction. Expect to spend at least $40 on yourself and a date, not including drinks.
Besides nights of amore, Angelina offers memorable mornings. Sundays present the perfect opportunity to treat parents or pals to brunch, where you can laugh and reminisce over bloody marys, mimosas, frittatas and eggs benedict.
