Frightening Fare

Terrifying treats abound at Chicago's restaurants this Halloween.

Oh, the horror! More frights abound in Centerstage's Halloween Guide...
Bars & Clubs ~ Pumpkin Pickin ~ Scared Sober ~ Halloween Costumes

OK, we only called it "frightening" for the sake of alliteration. In truth, this stuff is pretty tasty, though the names are gross enough to make you feel a little queasy. So pull it together or wimp out and have a friend order for you. After kicking back a couple Blood Baths, you'll realize that hesitation or for the birds. Or the bats.

Costumes meet cocktails at SushiSamba Rio
While the combo of "costume" and "play" into Cosplay sounds a little weak to our American ears, it's apparently all the rage in anime-happy Japan. SushiSamba's own Cosplay celebration kicks off Oct. 27 with Harajuku-theme decor and anime and Halloween-theme drinks like Transylvania Quail (with pumpkin risotto) and the Blood Bath cocktail. The staff will dress outrageously on Halloween itself.

Sip on a smokin' cocktail at Dine
This supper club turns spook with its $9 smokin' cocktails. And we mean smoke (no, thank you, dry ice). Choose from martini selections like Dracula's Kiss, Smashed Pumpkin with candy corn garnish, Tombstone and Grim Reaper. If you're worried that the Monster Mash might do a number of your stomach, pair with classic eats like pork 'n beans and fish & chips.

Keep it classy at Venus Greek-Cypriot Cuisine
If you want to celebrate but can't stomach the thought of another pimps and hos bash, get your recommended dose of autumn at Chicago's only Cypriot restaurant. The fall drink special, the $10 Autumn Delight, is a blend of Metaxa (Greek brandy) and Godiva White Chocolate Liqueur garnished with a Cappuccino Waffle Stick. As if you'll miss those Almond Joys.

Break at the costume at Orso's Restaurant
Too old to hit up a club but too young to have kids to take trick-or-treating? Party at Orso's Oct. 28 bash, which runs from 8 p.m. to 2 a.m. The Italian restaurant understands that beer nuts don't double as sustenance, so your $20 entry ($25 sans costume) includes unlimited beer, wine and pizza until midnight. Feeling kind of lame this year? No worries...prizes will be awarded for best and worst costume.

Sip scary Shiraz at Kafka Wine Co.
Kafka celebrates its third anniversary with a weekend of Halloween fun. From Oct. 28-31, your thoughts should be more on Chardonnay than candy. Door prizes and complimentary wine tastings ensure you'll enjoy plenty of loot, and DJ Plez will spin in the front of the store.

Howl over Hallotinis at 10pin Bowling Lounge
We have to admit that we think that serving Phlegm Brulee is way clever...though we're not sure we'll want to try the lime jello-topped creation. But after a $9.50 Mummy Juice or two (Absolut Mandarin, Jagermeister, Orange Curacao, lemonade and a splash of Sierra Mist) we may change our mind. Offered Oct. 28 and 31.

Pick a pumpkin platter at Tsuki
While we aren't too quick to equate "sushi" with "pumpkins," we won't raise our nose at Chef Hemmi's pumpkin platter. Available Oct. 23 to 31, the $10.95 plate includes pumpkin salad, a pumpkin croquette (panko fried pumpkin and shrimp croquette served with tonkatsu sauce) and tempura pumpkin maki sushi. Take it to the extreme with pumpkin mochi ice cream for $7.50.

Are we missing a frightful feast? Let us know.
