Editorial Review of Breadsmith, Inc. (Old Town)

A trip to Breadsmith can't help but inspire a major desire for dough. Sure, looks alone make this small storefront bakery a dangerous locale, with golden loaves and toasty baguettes lining the windows and taunting innocent passersby. But it’s the smell that’ll really get you. The aroma of freshly baked bread permeates the air inside and outside the shop and seeps mischievously into the surrounding shops as well.

Breadsmith's selection runs the gamut from cherry almond cookies to freshly baked dog biscuits. Patrons favor the jalapeno cheese bread, and the French Peasant bread garnered metal-worthy recognition from the International Culinary salon. Beat that, Wonder Bread! (Speaking of which, Breadsmith also offers a selection of American-style breads whose lack of bravado sweetly reflects the company’s Wisconsin roots.) If fat is your scapegoat du jour, you’ll love the selection of fat-free and preservative-free breads, rolls, cinnamon buns and pumpkin cookies.

Regardless of your dietary restrictions, Breadsmith's low prices will leave you feeling guilt-free: You can easily get by on five dollars or less, especially since the friendly bakers hand out free slices of warm bread each and every day. You and your wallet will both leave equally stuffed and satisfied.

Average cost: <$10
