A newcomer to Cafe Avanti, I had a hard time finding the place. I knew it was across from the Music Box, but that information did little to aid my search. I finally had to call a friend (a Cafe Avanti regular) who met me on the sidewalk, took my hand and led me to the door, where I quickly learned that it would be a shame for anyone to miss this gem of a coffee shop.

Cafe Avanti contains all the staples of your classic coffee shop: unimposing music, stacks of local papers and magazines, plenty of seating and a trendy yet vintage decor that befits any good cafe. But its make-yourself-at-home feel sets it apart. With a room in the front and another in the back, there's ample space to sip your coffee undisturbed while soaking up the quiet environment and free wifi service.

A large drink list offers tea and espresso favorites along with coffee that tastes exotic and almost spicy. But be warned: There's usually no more than one person working, so if you order something beyond black coffee, you may have to wait a bit. Basic cafe fare of scones, bagels and muffins does you right in the morning, though those settling in for the day will find a decent-size lunch menu that allows you to create your own sandwich, salad or omelet from a list of ingredients (goodies include tofu, hummus and cranberries).
