Shoehorned into a tiny nook of the Uptown Theater/Green Mill complex, muscled in there with the Broadway Grill and Crew, Carmela's barely has room for the handful of menu items it has up for offer. The good news is, those menu items are up to fresh and bright-tasting standards and are indeed superior to other taco joints in the neighborhood.
With tacos, tortas and burritos on hand, the menu is neither expansive nor terribly daring, although tongue and chorizo has a place, as well as some quality al pastor, served off the cone and not overly greasy. Chicken tacos on fresh tortillas (but not made in house) with barely any garnish and a squeeze of fresh lime for $1.50 are a highlight on a hot day, and finishing it off with a light and sweet glass of horchata is a perfect finish and a completely affordable lunch.
Hours are more limited than other taquerias, and while Carmela's isn't a destination, it is a much needed option to offset the Chinese, Thai and Vietnamese restaurants that make up most of the dining scene around the area. If you need a bad taco at 2 a.m., head down to Broadway and Clark to the 24-hour joint down the street. If you need a margarita, there's the thoroughly average Fiesta Mexicana around the corner. If you need a good, quality taco or three for lunch or dinner in Uptown, Carmela’s is your choice.
