If you want the taste of homemade ice cream without all the work, a trip to Cold Stone Creamery can satisfy all of your summer dessert needs. Since its start in Arizona in 1988, the Creamery’s creative take on customizing cones has been a huge hit with ice cream fans across the country. Customers select which “topping”-type items to combine with homemade ice cream and then watch as Creamery employees mix it up on a frozen granite stone slab behind the counter.

Mixtures are served in large waffle cones and include options like Apple Pie A La Cone (ice cream mixed with cinnamon, graham cracker pie crust, apple pie filling and caramel) and Birthday Cake Remix (cake batter ice cream, rainbow sprinkles, brownies and fudge), while the create-your-own combo is as simple as making a mental list of ingredients and telling the kid behind the counter. Several new locations set to open in Chicago this year.
