Baked sandwiches are the name of the game at this popular Lincoln Square submarine shop. Behind some of the shop's lovably cheesy decor is a huge selection of sandwiches with an even bigger selection of fixings, besting the Subways, Potbellys and Jimmy John's of the world with bigger entrees and local charm. Plus, does Subway have occasional acoustic shows from local talent? Didn't think so.
Sandwiches are generally priced in the $6-$7 range, with meals ending up around $10, a fairly reasonable price considering the size of some of these sandwiches. Try the Monterrey chicken wrap, with grilled chicken strips and pepper jack cheese, or the Mess, a cavalcade of flavor consisting of salami, capicola, ham, French fries and coleslaw all crammed into a sandwich roll. Vegetarians can find comfort with the Southwestern veggie wrap or a classic PB&J (baked!). Or anyone can simply create their own customizable sandwich, choosing between eight breads, eight toppings, six cheeses, 10 meats, and 11 dressings (chipotle pepper mayo!).
Costello's homemade sides also go beyond the lazy bag of Sun Chips. Chipotle mac and cheese, pineapple tuna salad and creamy coleslaw join bowls of chili or soup as unique complements to your sandwich (since, honestly, you can munch on Doritos at home).
Costello's interior features checkerboard floors, a red/green/yellow color pattern, and, if you're lucky, live entertainment. The sandwich shop invites local musicians to "share your music" on the first and third Sunday of every month, a clever, communal touch that certainly goes a long way toward making the shop a friendlier hangout.
