As compared to
Wicker Park,
Logan Square, and even the
Loop, River North presents an utter no-man's land of authentic and affordable Mexican restaurants. If you're tired of shelling out $20 for fajitas northeast of the river (or of resorting to trips to Chipotle), then remember this name: Restaurante el Norte.
Tucked away on a relatively sleepy strip of Chicago Avenue (nearby clubs Stone Lotus, Enclave and Climax ensure most traffic comes after hours), El Norte might easily be overlooked. Unlike most River North businesses, this is not a place that puts much stake in its appearance – the menu's front-page typo "for all special accasions" testifies to that.
The humble décor centers mostly on the warm yellow walls, which glow in the afternoon sunlight, as well as a few token Mexican decorations. Those in the know appreciate the sunny little spot for its friendly service and make-you-wanna-take-a-siesta food. Whatever your preferred manifestation of tortilla, meat and cheese (taco, burrito, fajita, torta, tostada, flauta, enchilada – they're all here and they're all delicious), El Norte will serve it to you in ample portions with vegetarian-friendly rice and beans (they use vegetable oil and stock, not lard).
Pretty much everything costs less than $10, but for $10.75, the El Norte Especial carne asada steak served with green grilled onions, rice, two eggs and avocado is the real deal. The only downside to this hidden gem is the unpredictable delivery service, so you'll want to dine in or pick up.
Average cost: <$10
