Being trapped in the corporate nine-to-five often means grabbing lunch at the nearest fast-food joint. Those who regularly find themselves wading through a sea of trans-fat choices in the Merchandise Mart can now take comfort in the addition of Foodstuffs. These culinary entrepreneurs, based in the state's northern suburbs (Evanston, Glencoe, Lake Forest and Glenview), are working their way into the city with a brand-new spin on fast food. The concept? "Gourmet" breakfasts and lunches whipped up in a matter of minutes.
Foodstuffs' food court location serves up simple breakfasts of egg scrambles ($3.49), yogurt parfaits and cereal. For $2.99 you can turn a bowl of frosted flakes into smores by adding chocolate chips, graham crackers and mini marshmallows. While there are only two lunch options (salad or sausage) the varieties of meats and toppings are endless. Choose from chef-made salads like the BLT, Chop Ten and caprese or create your own for $5.99. Sausages range from the traditional Italian to wild boar with orange sauce, scallions and crispy onions. If all goes well, perhaps a gourmet drive-thru will be next.
