If you dream of buying groceries while basking in the scent of fresh baked sweetbreads and other pastries, this is the bakery for you. Also, if you dream of stopping off at your local bakery to pick up a few groceries along with your sweets, this is the grocery store for you.
This tiny Guatemalan corner shop combines the two, giving Logan Square the beautiful gift of convenience and indulgence. With one hand, you can grab that bag of rice you need for tonight's dinner, and with the other you can grab a few pastries stuffed with sugary goodness you know you absolutely do not need, but your sweet tooth desperately wants anyway.
Fast on its way to becoming a neighborhood favorite, this unassuming, family-owned and operated corner store is the one responsible for the good smells emanating down Diversey west of California. If you walk in and don't recognize many of the groceries (the selection is more Goya than Campbell's) and don't know your pasteles from your pan dulce, don't fret. There's service with a smile here, and the patient owners are more than happy to explain what breads are stuffed with which savories.
Try the chile relleno, sizable and affordable at $3. The relleno here avoids the pitfall of being too greasy, and the chile is stuffed with just the right combination of meats and vegetables. Tamales, too, are tasty here, and vary in price depending on how many you buy.
If you're skipping ahead to dessert, there's a small table where you can sit and enjoy a coffee as well as any number of cookies, cream-filled pastries, and a thick and delicious pan dulce. Keep an eye on the chalkboard for daily or weekly specials. The bakery opens at 6 a.m., and stays open til 8 p.m., making it a perfect, wallet friendly stop for those days when you need a quick, affordable dinner, or just want to add a little dessert.
