The standard deli, as important as it is to the fabric of American society, can sometimes grow a bit stale, so the rare eatery that mixes up the fare while staying true to the rich tradition of American delicatessens is to be treasured. Haifa Cafe is just that place. While turkey and chicken sandwiches are always on the list, Haifa also offers a stack of Mediterranean options. Hummus and baba ghanouj are the best of a great list of appetizers, while sandwiches of chicken kabob and falafel will sate any lingering hunger.
For breakfast, Haifa has a wealth of big, crusty bagels served with eggs, cream cheese, hummus and lox (but not all at once). Haifa's juice and smoothie bar make up the substance of diner's health food menu; with its endless piles of bananas and apples, Haifa patrons can eat to their heart's content without jeopardizing that very same organ. Another point in Haifa's favor: No matter how small the charge, it takes plastic.
